Patient monitoring using LI-FI

Project Abstract / Summary : Communication systems is one of the rapidly advancing technology in today’s world. In earlier days, people used wired telephones for communication purposes. Later, transmission of data through wireless medium (namely air) is made possible through the rapid development in wireless technology. Now, the ability to transmit data through light without the use of any fibers is one of the fields of optical communication systems which is under research. This process of transmission of data through Light is called LI-FI (LIght-FIdility). The aim of our project is to apply this LI-FI concept in medical field by helping the doctors monitor their patients remotely using a mobile phone. In hospitals, continuous monitoring of the patients is a major issue. But this will not be a problem as long as the patients were in ICU. But once a patient gets shifted to ward, the doctor should manually check the health condition of a patient by taking measurements of Blood Pressure(BP), heart beat, temperature, etc. on a regular basis(atleast once a day). So, in emergency situations, the doctor has to be informed manually. In worst cases, a patient couldn’t even get a first aid. So, some kind of provision for automatic monitoring of the patient is needed. Our project will satisfy this need by making use of BP sensor, temperature sensor, pic microcontroller, LI-FI module, a laptop and an android mobile. The BP sensor and temperature sensor will measure the Blood Pressure level, body temperature and heart beat of a patient at regular intervals without any human intervention and the digital values will then be displayed by the LCD board at the transmitter side. The pic microcontroller will convert the values into binary data. The LI-FI module on the transmitter side will then transmit the data to another LI-FI module on the receiver side. The position of both the LI-FI transmitter and LI-FI receiver will be fixed in a Line Of Sight (LOS) position. High intensity LASER beam is used for the transmission of data so that the radiations from other light sources cannot interfere with the data. The received data will then be stored in a Laptop and the values can be seen on the display. The laptop then sends these values to a specially designed android app installed in the doctor’s mobile so that the doctor can remotely check the health condition of the patient whenever he wants. The Laptop will also compare the received value with some predefined range of values and whenever the received value goes out of this range, it will send a notification to the doctor’s mobile through the app and also through the sms so that the patient can be immediately treated. Thus, by implementing this project, doctors can monitor their patients remotely without any human interventions and can treat the patients effectively on time and it also reduces the overhead of taking manual measurements of BP, temperature and heart beat of a patient.
