Panasonic's late to Indian smartphone party

Not sure if Panasonic's doing the right thing - but the company has announced that they'll be launching their first ever smartphone in India on May 16. There are no details of the phone yet, but the company won't be manufacturing their own dog-food; and like most of the Indian budget-phone companies, will create a line-up of mobile products manufactured by some other manufacturer.

Of course, the company will benefit from the brand they've built for years. But unless the company brings something powerful - it will remain 'just another smartphone brand' in India.

Thoughts?

I second you on this point.
The reason could be, in India we all go by the brand and the name. In India, in Mobile smartphone arena currently Samsung, Nokia and Apple are giants. no matter how good and price effective Micromax (Canvas HD) or Karboon would be, for them competing with the giants is not possible(atleast till we change our thinking).

I believe same would be the condition for Panasonic... soon it will be in oblivion.

They will meet the same fate as videocon did. They have a brand, but with the current cut-throat competition between other companies like Samsung,Apple and Micromax, it would be pretty arduous for Panasonic to even survive in the market. And if we talk about the pricing of their product, i would like to mention that they have launched a tablet which has some great features and was showcased on Gadget Gurus but its only CON was the label saying - Rs:1,75,000 😲

There was a news regarding the same in April this year. And it is important to note that, Panasonic already sells a range of Android smartphones in the Japanese market.

If some sources are to be believed, Panasonic seems to have chosen ODM for their strategy i.e. the company will get the devices manufactured by a third party to create a product lineup more suited for the Indian market. India will now serve as a test bed for the new business model and if successful Panasonic plans on replicating it in other emerging markets. Wise move, I think. 👀
