NVIDIA Unveils Tegra X1 Mobile Super Chip, The World’s First Teraflops Mobile Processor

A decade ago we used to associate the term with teraflops with supercomputers but from this year we shall relate them with mobile chips. NVIDIA has unveiled the Tegra X1 mobile “super-chip” that delivers over one teraflops of processing power. The Tegra X1 is based on the company’s Maxwell GPU architecture and is twice as fast as its predecessor, the Tegra X1 that debuted last CES and was based on Kepler architecture. The Tegra X1 which is based on 20mm process has eight CPU cores (4x ARM Cortex A57 + 4x ARM Cortex A53), a 256-core Maxwell GPU, support for recording 4K resolution video at 60fps using H.265, H.264 and VP9 codec and a whopping 1.3 gigapixel of camera throughput.

In the official press release, NVIDIA compares its Tegra X1 with the world’s first teraflops computer the ASCI Red. While the now discontinued supercomputer occupied 1600 square feet of space and consumed 500,000 watts of power, NVIDIA’s creation resembles a thumbnail and draws less than 10 watts of power. NVIDIA flaunted the graphics capabilities of the Tegra X1 by running a demo of Elemental, a game by Epic Games on stage at Las Vegas today. The Tegra X1 supports major graphic standards like Unreal Engine 4, DirectX 12, OpenGL 4.5, CUDA, OpenGL ES 3.1 and the Android Extension Pack. This means that game developers will find it easier to bring console quality gaming to mobile devices.

NVIDIA says that the chip has been built to work for embedded products, mobile devices, autonomous machines and automotive applications. Products with Tegra X1 at their heart will start surfacing from first half of 2015.
