Till now, Amazon has been using E Ink display with kindle devices. This display gives a comfortable, paper like reading experience. It doesn’t put pressure on eyes like traditional backlit LCD displays. But the issue with E Ink display is that it can be read only in well-lit environment like in daylight or under a lamp. Now, amazon is ready to change that and they are going to introduce glowing screen in new kindle devices. The technology used is patented by a leading company in light-guide technology named Oy Modilis, which Amazon acquired in 2010. Apparently, the company has a lot of patents in this area including the one which Amazon is going to use. Devin categorizes the light as soft glow, not like the harsh backlit of LCDs. Reportedly when you tap on the screen a slider pops up, which on dragging to the right illuminates the screen evenly. It looks like a glow in the dark and it makes the screen more readable in the daylight.

One of the biggest selling points of kindle eReader is its E Ink display which doesn’t use much power, resulting in longer battery life. Illuminating the screen is going to take power, so new kindle might come up with a larger battery or lower battery life. The extra circuitry might add up to the thickness. As there is no much information available on how exactly its going to be, we can hope that it would be as comfortable to read as E Ink display.
