This is the second acquisition LinkedIn has made in the space of a week. Last week, the company added company status updates, which allows you to see the latest news from companies you are following. IndexTank technology is being integrated into various products and services on the social network.

Companies can integrate IndexTank’s custom search options into their website without having to host the search software themselves. IndexTank provides a full-text search API that offers real-time search results. There’s also a custom sorting algorithm which will companies more control over what search results are displayed.  To illustrate, the algorithm can be used to restrict search results to a geographic region. Reddit and Twitvid are in the long list of IndexTank’s customers. IndexTank’s other features include real-time feed indexing, instantaneous availability of search data, geo search and instant insights about indexed data from search.

In future, LinkedIn speculates managing billions of people profiles and jobs and it could use IndexTank’s world-class search technology in taking LinkedIn to this next level. LinkedIn has committed to keeping IndexTank running for the next six months and open-sourcing key components.
