obsilonmaybe you can used this few simple components.
Stepper motor,shaft, pinion and rack. -
ShrinkDWorldhey you can control stepper motor by using micro controller .

ramaseenulinear hydraulic actuators may be used for linear motion instead of servo motors.If servo can only be used ,use stepper motor with pinion connected to motor shaft.pinion rotates to move toothed rack to give linear motion.
