Laboratory Investigation of unreinforced and reinforced soil mass using biaxial geogrids.

Project Abstract / Summary : Soil Reinforcement is an effective and reliable technique. The main objective of strengthening the soil mass is to increase bearing capacity, improve stability, decrease settlements and lateral deformations. The reinforced soil or mechanically stabilized earth is strengthened by the inclusion of tensile elements like geogrids, geosynthetics, metal bars and metal strips. It is now well established that the use of geogrids in heavy construction industry for the construction of structures like retaining walls, embankments over soft soil, steep slopes etc. have better economy.

A review of experimental and numerical tests is to be carried out on both unreinforced and reinforced soil with geogrids under static loading.

Geogrid used are bi-axial grids of tensile strength 60, 80, 100 and 120 kN/m2.Experimenting will be done on geogrid samples under different combinations and conditions to provide optimum result with economical consideration. The basic aim is to facilitate use of minimum number of geogrids in a back-fill giving the same tensile strength as of the ones wherein higher number of layers are introduced.

The research has been undertaken to study the effect of geogrid reinforcement and following tests will be performed-

· California Bearing Ratio (CBR)

· Direct shear test

Soil samples will be collected and preliminary tests like particle size classification in accordance with Indian Standard Classification (ISC), moisture content, specific gravity determination, particle size analysis and proctor test are also intended to be performed

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : Soil reinforcing technique has emerged as one of the most promising field in civil engineering. The popularity of soil structures reinforced with mechanical inclusions has brought to light the important issues of service life, durability and above all economy.
The use of geogrids in multiple layers for the most efficient design combination will prove to be very cost effective.
Considering future scope on similar lines, design of backfill with combinations of uni-axial, bi-axial, tri-axial and quad-axial geogrids can be used.
