Kaleidoscope Made Up Of Metamaterials Can Be Used In Biomedical Sensors

National Institute for Standards and Technology scientists have made an unimaginable concept real. They have succeeded in tuning metamaterials to store energy using a particular frequency. The question of “Energy generation” has riddled all researchers since beginning of science. Scientists have always successfully solved the problems which cropped up at that particular instant. Similar problems have also surfaced regarding energy storage. This time it is really a “never thought before concept” of using metamaterials for energy storage. However, those who have really started thinking in this direction, The invention’s primary aim would be an application as a biomedical sensor and other microwave devices.

Recently they were also used in making a shrinking device which would make objects appear smaller than their actual size. Their property of bending light waves was well utilized in both of the above inventions. However, NIST researchers have now worked upon one more of metamaterial’s property of resonating at a particular frequency.
The scientists have used purified water in tuning the resonant frequency of metamaterials so that they can store energy which can then be utilized in other applications. The concept is similar of using water to change the sound of Glass when tinkled. The sound changes because water has the property of changing Glass’s frequency. Researchers, with help of computer simulations have made a “kaleidoscope” of metamaterial using 18 copper squares of 10 mm size in this experiment. The copper structure can be excited by microwaves. The energy liberated thus, is stored in the “T” shaped gaps in between the copper structures.  The fluid is then packed in plastic tubes and the structure being placed in a wave guide. This gives makes it perfectly synonymous to a kaleidoscope.
NIST scientists have also worked on “not using water”; just to see if there are any changes. The results observed varied significantly. It was seen that in the absence of water, the frequency was 3.75 Gigahertz on the contrary upon using purified water, the frequency reduced to 3.6 Gigahertz. The phenomenon exhibited by this kaleidoscope would be utilized in storing electric field upon further perfection.
On seeing this invention, the foremost though coming to mind is about an Opera singer cracking a glass. It happens because glass stores the sound frequency. The concept, however, was only known but hardly ever applied. The new kaleidoscope made up of metamaterials seems to be a beginning in this direction.
