Is Statue of Unity Waste of Public Money?
The Government of India has erected the world's tallest statue - called the Statue of Unity at the Sardar Sarovar dam in Gujarat. Estimated Rs. 3000 crores were spent on the statue and there were debates in the TV media whether the Government has wasted money on building statue.
The argument was that the money spent on statue could have spent on building hospitals and schools. What's your take on this?
Why glorify an individual justifying it in the name of unity, freedom or whatever?
Thomas Gray wrote:
Full many a gem of purest ray serene,
The dark unfathom'd caves of ocean bear:
Full many a flow'r is born to blush unseen,
And waste its sweetness on the desert air.
Some village-John Hampden, that with dauntless breast
The little tyrant of his fields withstood;
Some mute inglorious Milton here may rest,
Some Oliver Cromwell guiltless of his country's blood.
The applause of listening senates to command,
In my personal view such aggrandisement is a waste whatever the justification trotted out. That money could well have been used for the betterment of the country.
Who in the rest of the world cares cares that we have the tallest statue in the world? If it comes to that how many of us care either?
