Intelligent Traffic Regulation with Congestion Alert

Project Abstract / Summary : ABSTRACT

Present traffic systems fail to provide traffic information including congested roads and alternate routes available in case of congestion. Current traffic light controllers (TLC) are based on microcontroller and microprocessors. These TLC have limitations because it uses the predefined hardware, which is functioning according to the program that does not have the flexibility of modifications on real time basis. Due to the fix time intervals of green, orange and red signals, the waiting time is more and car use more fuel. To make traffic light controlling more efficient we exploit the emergence of new technique called as Intelligent Traffic Light Controller. This makes the use of sensor network along with embedded technology.
The timing of red green lights at each crossing of road will be intelligently decided based on the total traffic, on all adjacent roads. Thus optimization of traffic light switching increases road capacity and traffic flow and can prevent traffic congestion. GSM cell phone interface is also provided for users, those who wish to obtain the latest position of traffic on congested road. This is the unique feature of this project, which is very useful to car drivers to take the alternative route in case of congestion.
The various performance evaluation criteria are average waiting time, average distance travelled by the vehicles, switching frequency of the green light at the junction, efficient emergency mode operation and satisfactory operation of SMS using GSM mobile. The performance of the intelligent traffic light controller is compared with the fixed mode traffic light controller. It is observed that proposed intelligent traffic light controller is more efficient than the conventional controller in respect of less waiting time. More distance is travelled by average vehicles. Moreover, the designed system has simple architecture, fast response time, user friendliness and scope for future expansion.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : The system solves following problems:-

1. Heavy traffic jams.

2. No traffic, but still need to wait.

3. Emergency vehicles stuck in traffic jam.

4. Avoid accidents.

5. Lack of traffic information to users.

6. Helps to decide alternate way.

Scope:-

1. This system can be enhanced in such a way that the lights will automatically turn-off when no vehicles are running on any side of road, which will help in saving power.

2. Provisions can be made for easy passing of emergency vehicles like Ambulance, fire brigade, police, etc.

3. In future this system can be used to inform people about traffic conditions at various places through RADIO.

4. Traffic lights can be increased to N number and traffic light control can be done for whole city by sitting on a single place.
