InkCase Plus: A E-Ink Display For Android Smartphones Gets Funded On Kickstarter

Nothing is more depressing than seeing your smartphone run out of juice at the moment you need it the most. Doesn’t matter if you have a ridiculously expensive phone with a huge battery it still lets you down time and again. Even if you switch off battery sapping features such as GPS, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and your data connection your phone manages to run out of charge because it has been claimed that your display consumes nearly 50% of your charge. We know that the Russians found the solution to this problem with the YotaPhone Released In Russia, Features Dual-Screen With LCD & E-Ink Display which had conventional display on the front and a e-ink one on the rear. Since the phone has not made it globally, a startup called OAXIS Inc. had taken the initiative to launch e-ink display for iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S II last year. This year though they have improved their product and put it up on Kickstarter for funding. The case titled InkCase Plus will be available for any smartphone that manages to get at least 500 votes from the contributors.

The InkCase Plus is an always on e-ink display that hooks up to your smartphone using low power Bluetooth. Using the FitCase it becomes a part of your phone and better still it works away from the smartphone as well. Apart from reading books like you do on an e-ink reader, you can use the InkCase+ as a personalised custom case with the picture of your choice. Notifications from your social networking websites and messengers are displayed on the screen in real time and fitness buffs will be glad to know that the InkCase Plus can pull up your fitness data from smartphone sensors. Just like your run-off-the-mill smartwatches you can control your music too. With the InkCase Plus you can also answer your calls. Now this is a square one solution to the battery problem, you see using a Bluetooth enabled gadget to answer your calls will be just as wasteful. Since the InkCase Plus does not mirror the smartphone’s screen, the company has developed the basic applications. It has released the software developers kit to interested enthusiasts who want to get their apps ready for the InkCase Plus’ public launch in October 2014.

I'm reminded off the way Samsung S5 introduced the battery saving mode. They promised that the phone will last for 2 more days once you turn it on. I'm wondering if the display was turned black and white - will it save the battery?

But e-Ink display looks like a nice thing to have. Not sure I'd pay that amount though.

What's the price, did I miss it?
