Apple's announced that the desktop lineup, iMac has been refreshed. The new iMac machines will now ship with Intel Haswell processor and improved 802.11ac WiFi. The basic iMac 21.5" model hosts a 2.7 GHz quad-core Intel i5 processor with new Iris Pro GPU. The high end versions, both 21.5" & 27", have been equipped with quad-core i5 processors and up to 3.4 GHz NVIDIA GeForce 700 GPUs. The new hardware has been claimed to offer 2x video memory and about 40% faster performance than the earlier generation. The new machines have been equipped with the latest wireless modules as well. Apple had introduced 802.11ac Wi-Fi in the 2013 Macbook Air refresh and it was just a matter of time that the new wireless hardware made it to the iMac desktops. The new wireless standard delivers about 3X the speed and range as compared to the earlier standards.

But that's not all for the new iMacs. These machines will now have support for PCIe based flash storage that make the 'Fusion Drives' to operate at 50% faster speeds. The fusion drive is a combo of regular HDD and SSDs to offer the high storage capacities of HDD and the faster read/write speeds of the SSDs. Customers will be able to configure their iMac machines with 1 or 3 TB Fusion Drive or go with all-Flash drive with 1TB storage capacity.

The new machines ship with 8GB of RAM and default 1TB storage space. The memory of these machines can be upgraded to about 32GB. For connectivity, iMacs have two Thunderbolt ports and four USB 3.0 ports.

By the way - I've no idea whether this update will have any effect on the price of iMac in India. I hope it doesn't push the prices up! I'm sad that the iMac 27" now goes way beyond Rs.1,22,000. 😕
