Hasta La Vista, AltaVista!

altavista

Remember AltaVista? The search engine that everyone used when the Internet wasn't as big as it is today. Yahoo, the current owner of AltaVista search engine, has decided to pull the plug on AltaVista. The old goats may live the past until July 8, 2013 after which people will have to use Yahoo Search Engine (what's that?). That's what Yahoo's new CEO, Marissa Mayer wants you to do as Yahoo shuts down about 12 products from its clan.

We're quite sure that the younger generation didn't use, or even know, that anything like AltaVista existed. AltaVista was one of the first search engines that existed even before Larry met Surgey. The search engine has been operating for over 1.5 decade and remained a leading search engine for quite some time. It was overtaken by Google as we reached the end of the last century and was acquired by Overture. Overture itself was taken over by Yahoo a few years later to power Yahoo's online advertising business.

Over the time, the best of the features of AltaVista made it to Yahoo's own search engines, including some of the core algorithms that were developed by the original AltaVista engineering team.

Check out the list of other products Yahoo's shutting down in the next few days on Yahoo's Official Tumblog : Keeping our Focus on What’s Next | Yahoo . If you are an oldie, do share your memories of using AltaVista.
