Green Cars #2: Mercedes SLS AMG eDRIVE

In the last article, we discussed about the need and the development in the Green Car technology, that is, #-Link-Snipped-#.

In this article, we take the discussion further to another upcoming electric supercar by another German automobile giant, the Mercedes.

Mercedes plans to launch its own complete electrically run and zero emission version of the SLS (No more a hybrid thing!), the all new SLS AMG eDRIVE!

The design of this new EV is a classic one which takes us back to the ‘50s. It has gull-wing doors, which can be seen in the picture, that are pretty much like the ‘50s Mercedes SL gull-wing. It has the same lightweight aluminum body as the standard model.

The Mercedes SLS AMG eDRIVE is expected to be out in the market in 2013 with a whopping price of $186,000! Again, we clearly see the price is very high just like in the case of Audi e-TRON and its quite clear that the car won’t fetch many buyers! (although it surely is going to fetch a lot of attention!)

“With the SLS AMG with electric drive, we wanted to redefine the super sports car. For us, it is not just about responsibility. We attach just as much importance to excitement and classic AMG performance,” says Volker Mornhinweg, Chief Executive Officer of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

Here are some further details:

[*]Just like the 2012 Audi e-TRON, this Merc will be an all-wheel drive as it has 4 electric motors, one for each wheel.
[*]These motors send a total of 392 KW and 880 newton meters of torque to all the 4 wheels. ( The standard SLS model has 420 KW and 649  Nm)
[*]Mercedes is targeting the same 3.8 seconds time span for 0 to 100Km/hr which is achieved by its fossil fuel version-albeit. The span is less by a second than the Audi e-TRON.
[*]Even it is trying to catch up the performance with the albeit, the top speed of SLS AMG eDRIVE is far less than that of albeit. The fossil fuel run Albeit has a top speed of 317 Km/hr whereas eDRIVE has a top speed of just 200 Km/hr (same as the top speed of e-TRON and most of the other EVs)
[*]In one full charge, the Mercedes SLS AMG eDRIVE can manage a distance of 150 to 180 Km from its 48-kilowatt-modular battery. This distance is comparatively lesser that what e-TRON covers (248 Km)
[*]The 48 KW modulated battery is divided into three 16KW units, one below the stretched hood, another along the central tunnel and third behind passenger compartment.
[*]The batteries take about 8 hours to get completely charged from a normal 230V household supply or 5 hours on a high density charger.

Overall, the power and torque ratings of the eDRIVE are higher than the Audi e-TRON. The performance of the eDRIVE looks better too (even though it lags behind in distance covered in one full charge). No wonder the price of eDRIVE is much higher than the e-TRON!
