GMT - The World's Largest Astronomical Telescope To Mine The Sky Soon!

The Giant Magellan Telescope or GMT is a super giant earth-based telescope that could possibly revolutionize the way we look and know the universe today. It is based out of Chile and the construction of this mega-structure has already begun. We can expect to see it operational in about 10 years. The engineers behind the project blasted a 3 million cubic feet of rock from a mountaintop in the Chilean Andes. This is the first blast in the series of more than 70 controlled blasts that are planned to happen over the next few months for building a solid foundation for the large telescope and its precision scientific instruments, which will be located at the Carnegie Institution's Las Campanas Observatory.

The GMT is a segmented mirror telescope that employs seven of today's largest stiff monolith mirrors as segments. The GMT's resolving power will be 10 times greater than the Hubble Space Telescope. The GMT project is the result of collaborative work of leading universities and science institutions.

Why this Giant Magellan Telescope excites us is because of the unprecedented capabilities it will hold. We could see right through the beginning of time and possibly witness the origin & birth of the first stars, galaxies and black holes. We will be able to explore the deepest mysteries like watching the planetary systems similar to our own! The GMT will help astronomers probe the nature of dark matter and dark energy - mysterious forms of matter and energy that allow galaxies to form while the expansion of the Universe accelerates. Just the thought of it is enough to send chills through our bones.

You can take a look at the first blasting from the Chilean Atacama Desert that occurred on March 22nd prior to the official "Big Bang Event" which marks the official ground-breaking event of the GMT on March 23rd.
