GM Pilot Project: Parents To Track Teen-Drivers In Real Time!

With the new pilot program brought out by General Motors Co. 's OnStar unit, parents can now keep a track on the real-time location of their teenagers when they are driving. The service will prpovide family members with the ability to track the location of others by logging on to a GM website to survey a map with the vehicle's exact location at any time or by receiving text messages or email alerts. OnStar President Linda Marshall in announcing the project at the Center for Automotive Research Management Briefing Seminars said, "Our subscribers have asked us for a solution to help them stay connected to their family when they're on the road. What parent hasn't asked their teenaged driver to call or send a text when they arrive somewhere, only to not hear from them?"

For a start, GM will invite about 10,000 active U.S. OnStar subscribers to participate in the pilot program. A GM spokeswoman said that the pilot program is focused on GM owners who are parents with teen drivers. Parents or others can choose the day, time as well as the frequency of the alerts. "The glorious thing about technology is that it help with age-old problems such as making sure your teenager is where he or she should be," Marshall said.
GM is regarding other pilot programs, including "Speed Alert, Boundary Alert and Arrival/Departure Alert." A parent could adjust an alert for when a teen driver went above 75 miles per hour, and receive a text message. The program could end a long-time acceptable practice of teenagers using a parent's car for ulterior motives. It could also mean parents could track the locations of elderly drivers, or family members can track other family members driving in inclement weather or in remote locations, just to ensure their safety. "That means peace of mind for them and their loved ones while they're on the road," Marshall said. GM said it will use subscriber interest and comments from the pilots will lead decisions for set up and pricing of this service.

Access to the Family Link website requires an OnStar user name and password. Only the subscriber with access can locate a vehicle or send alerts. OnStar is usable on more than 40 models and will soon be ready for installation on most other vehicles already on the road through local electronics retailers, including Best Buy. OnStar on Monday night will propel a nationwide ad campaign for the standard-sizd aftermarket OnStar rearview mirror, which has the safety service available for non-GM vehicles, Marshall said. OnStar holds more than 6 million subscribers in the U.S., Canada and China.
