Fingerprint Sensors Can Now Be Located Right Under Your Smartphone's Display Glass

Ever since fingerprint sensors made their way to our mobile devices for an added layer of security, they have been introduced as a separate button on the front or rear side of the smartphone. With their latest research work, LG Innotek has made it possible to fit a fingerprint sensor module at the bottom of a smartphone's display. This means that for your phone to securely identify you as the owner, you only need to tap on its cover glass. Not only is this innovation friendly for the ergonomics of a smartphone design, but it will also keep the module safe from scratches or water splashes.

To achieve this, the researchers at LG Innotek created a 0.3mm thin shallow furrow on the rear side of the smartphone's cover glass and installed a slick fingerprint sensor inside with surprising precision. The team also devised a new highly enduring adhesive to attach the sensor inside the glass.

Since, tough glasses such as Gorilla Glass or DragonTrail glass have proven their strength, the underlying fingerprint sensor is sure to be kept safe from any external damage.

Interestingly, it has come to light that the new module placed directly under the glass showed greater efficiency and accuracy as compared to the traditional button type sensors. The FAR or the false acceptance rate is said to be of the range 0.002% - which is a number that depicts the system's chances of falsely recognising someone else as the actual user.

As globally we see a rise in the mobile payments market, it is only time that we see an explosion in the number of devices we use daily needing a fingerprint sensor. And therefore, the new technology from LG could soon see a lot of commercial value.
