FDA Approved Non-Invasive Technique To Treat Tumors

The recent trend in biomedical technology uses the power of electric field to treat cancer. The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has approved a new technique for treating patients with tumor, as a substitute to chemotherapy. Such a kind of treatment by Novocure promises to be non-invasive and uses Tumor Treating Fields abbreviated as NovoTTF, to treat cancerous cells and is available for treating adult patients with recurring tumors.

The technology initiates the treatment process by providing electric field to the patient through a portable wearable device that can help a person maintain his daily activities normally without any signs of inactivity or depression. Eilon Kirson, M.D., Ph. D., Novocure’s Chief Medical Officer said: Our device provides patients and physicians with novel, non-invasive alternative technique to chemotherapy that is safe and sound. The device allows for continuous treatment without any side-effects, he added.

The portable device weighs about six pounds and is to be used continuously throughout the day by the patient. Test reports even reveal that the device can decelerate cancerous growth and reverse tumor growth curbing the process through which cancer cells multiply (Mitosis).

The entire treatment procedure involves placing of medicated pads or electrodes onto the patient’s skin which in turn creates a low strength alternating electric field within the tumor to oppose mitosis. However, mild to moderate rash beneath the electrodes is commonly reported from the NovoTTF treatment.

The reports of the trial run conducted on 237 patients revealed an overall improved living and healthy life when tumors are treated with NovoTTF technique. Bill Doyle, Executive Chairman of Novocure said that his company has much more plans to execute for treating lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer and breast cancer. He believes that in the next ten years to come, TTF will be the most powerful weapon to treat the most difficult solid tumors.
