EMG CONTROLLED SELF AUTOMATED PROSTHETIC ARM FOR PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED

Project Abstract / Summary : The aim of our project is to provide useable working arms for the patients who had to undergo amputation of arms due to trauma, disease or congenital conditions. The term prostheses, in medical fields refer to an artificial device that replaces a missing part of a body. Limb prostheses have been quite common over the past few years. It includes both upper and lower limbs replacements. The upper limb prostheses is mainly used in cases of shoulder or elbow disarticulation, full arm, partial hand, finger, partial fingers. The lower limb prostheses may include a large range including hip or knee disarticulation, foot, partial foot and so on. We are trying to implement the same prostheses by creating and detecting the electric impulse from any other moving part of the body or from the contraction and relaxation of forearm. This is processed and converted as digital signals. The required range of the signals is compared with the reference values and this in turn causes the motion of the arm. We are trying to bring about five to seven basic movements of the arm used for general purposes. We are mainly concentrating on the movements such as; grab and release, individual finger movements, directional movements of the arm. The general prosthetic arms of high efficiency are of high cost. Thus we are also trying to make it more affordable and of less power consumption. The most advanced prosthetic arm available at present is the Bebionic, which is used as a reference to our project. It is also user friendly. Thus we are creating a Bio-Medical instrument to provide additional strength to the physically challenged.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : Imagine doing stuffs without the hands. Its not possible, right? This is the reason we chose to work on the project. Physically Challenged people have inferior complexity that they cant do the stuffs like a normal people. We are trying to a change the lifestyle of the physically challenged by providing them a low cost artificial arm. This not only makes them to do the required things without any hindrances.
