EFFECT OF COPPER SLAG AS A SAND REPLACEMET ON PROPERTIES OF CONCRTE

Project Abstract / Summary : CHAPTER: 1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Introduction

“Copper slag is a by-product created during the copper smelting and refining process. As refineries draw metal out of copper Ore, they produce a large volume of non-metallic dust, soot & rock. Collectively, these materials make up slag”

In India, there is great demand of aggregates mainly from civil engineering industry for road and concrete constructions. But now a days it is very difficult problem for available of fine aggregates. So researchers developed waste management strategies to apply for replacement of fine aggregates for specific need. Natural resources are depleting worldwide while at the same time the generated wastes from the industry are increasing substantially. The sustainable development for construction involves the use of nonconventional and innovative materials, and recycling of waste materials in order to compensate the lack of natural resources and to find alternative ways conserving the environment. Copper slag is one of the materials that is considered as a waste material which could have a promising future in construction industry as partial or full substitute of either cement or aggregates. It is a byproduct obtained during the matte smelting and refining of copper. To produce every ton of copper, approximately 2.2–3.0 tons copper slag is generated as a by-product material. In Oman approximately 60,000 tons of copper slag is produced every year (Alnuaimi AS et al., 2012). Copper slag is a by-product material produced from the process of manufacturing copper. As the copper settles down in the smelter, it has a higher density, impurities stay in the top layer and then are transported to a water basin with a low temperature for solidification. The end product is a solid, hard material that goes to the crusher for further processing. Copper slag is a by-product obtained during the matte smelting and refining of copper. Copper slag used in
This work was brought from Sterile Industries Ltd (SIL), Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu, and India. SIL is producing Copper slag during the manufacture of copper metal. Currently, about 2600 tons of Copper slag is produced per day and a total accumulation of around 1.5 million tons. It is a by-product obtained during the matter smelting and refining of copper. To produce every ton of copper, approximately 2.2–3.0 tons copper slag is generated as a by-product material. Utilization of copper slag in applications such as Portland cement substitution and/or as aggregates has threefold advantages of eliminating the costs of dumping, reducing the cost of concrete, and minimizing air pollution.
1.2 Problem Statement: Proposing methodology for replacing sand with Copper Slag in concrete for improving strength of concrete and making construction more economical.
.
1.3 Objectives of Study:
In the study, the following objectives are investigated:
Study the potential of Copper Slag as replacement material for sand in cement concrete.
Understand the various limits for Replacement of copper Slag as Fine aggregate.
Study the mix design aspects for Copper Slag Replacement.
Perform laboratory tests.
To understand applications.

1.4 Future scope of Copper Slag as a Sand Replacement:
We can use copper slag with other material and Admixture which can be used in concrete.
The study of admixtures and super plasticizer which could help in replacing the copper slag without affecting the properties of concrete.
We can also go for random percentage of replacement of replacement of copper slag.
We can also go for different w/c ratio.
We can study the behavior concrete on addition of copper slag.
We can improve the uses and utility of copper slag.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : This is really new and innovative idea and concept.so we waanted to do some thing really innovative and cheaper and which makes the concerte properties and enhaces its stanilty and strenght agaist connventional aggregate.

Project Highlights : This is really new and innovative idea and concept.so we waanted to do some thing really innovative and cheaper project idea .and one most important thing.....jeetna kisko nhi pasnd hota yaarr...😉and this is very rare in india and very few work had done on this concept so it is necessary for ys to win ...
