Linux founder Linus Torvalds has marked Linux Kernel 3.1 as 'stable' and made it available for download. The 3.1 went through about 10 release candidates before being marked as stable. In May 2011, Linux Kernel #-Link-Snipped-# its 20th birthday and now, 3.1 is ready to rock your computers. The new kernel offers plethora of new features and the most notable ones are support to OpenRISC opensource CPU, Intel Ivy Bridge and Cedar Trail chips support, Nintendo WII remote control support and tons of new drivers. Other important tweaks & improvements include better slab collector, superior writeback throttling, new iSCSI implementation & NFC (Near Field Communication) chip support. Developers have also paid greater attention to power management features through the new cpupowerutils userspace utility. You can now expect improved battery performance on your laptops with the new Kernel. The filesystem barriers are enabled for the EX3 filesystem by default.
