DoT Finally Gives In, Qualcomm Broadband Comes To India

Indian Goverment has finally approved to grant an Internet Service Provider(ISP) license to the US Wireless Giants, Qualcomm, to provide its broadband services to Delhi, Mumbai, Kerela and Haryana. This comes in after an initial rejection to the license application by the DoT (Department of Telecommunication) because of Qualcomm missing the deadline.

Earlier Qualcomm had bid $1 Billion to win broadband services for four regions, namely Mumbai, Delhi, Kerela and Haryana which would allow them to set up their broadband wireless access for the above mentioned cities. But the ISP license rested unapproved by the Indian Goverment delaying the process. The reason stated was that Qualcomm had missed its deadline by not applying within three months of being issued letter of intent. Another NIA rule was violated when Qualcomm nominated four companies instead of the one allowed for the license. This was only recently settled by Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) when Qualcomm Inc filed against the DoT for refusing them the license, hereby Qualcomm maintaining its stand that all has been rightfully done.

With Qualcomm finally getting its nod, the broadband wireless access market is sure to see a sturdy competition with Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, Aircel, Netherland’s Augere and Tikona preparing to launch their services by next year.
