Difference Between iPad 2 & Samsung Galaxy Tab

Almost every engineer out there wants to own a tablet. Right now, the biggest two players in the tablet markets are Apple and Samsung. Yes, Blackberry too is making an entry but for this discussion, we'll focus only on iPad 2 and Samsung Galaxy Tablets. Before you decide the best tablet for your needs, consider following differences between the tablets -

Operating Systems: iPad 2 runs on iOS and offers access to mega Apple App store. Samsung Galaxy Tab (Both 10.1" & 8.9") run on Google Android Honeycomb which offers access to the Android marketplace. Comparing by the size of these stores, Apple's store is way ahead of Android marketplace. But be assured that both stores will have the most popular apps you'll need.

Screen Sizes & Resolution: iPad 2 has 9.7-inch LED-backlit IPS LCD with 1024x768 resolution while Samsung Galaxy Tablets (both 10.1" and 8.9") have PLS LCD and operate at a resolution of 1280x800. Samsung Galaxy Tab definitely offers better resolution than iPad 2, but you should experience the display in person before you decide to buy any of these tablets.

MicroSD Card Support: We don't know why, but iPad 2 does not offer support to MicroSD. On the other hand, Galaxy Tablets offer support to extended memory up to 32 GB.

Front & Rear Camera: iPad 2 front camera is 0.3 MP while Galaxy Tablets offer 2 MP camera, which is better than iPad. iPad 2 rear camera is 0.7 MP fixed focus while Samsung Galaxy Tab's rear camera is 3 MP with LED & Auto-Focus. Both iPad and Galaxy Tabs are capable of capturing videos at 720p resolution. Many users have complained about iPad 2's still image quality (through rear cam).

Bluetooth: iPad 2 offers Bluetooth 2.1+EDR while Samsung Galaxy Tablets offer Bluetooth 3.0 (8.9"). Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1" offers Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, just like iPad 2. Samsung decided to offer upgrade to Samsung Galaxy Tab after Apple announce iPad 2.

Battery: Apple is obsessed with offering longer lasting batteries in their iDevices. iPad 2 offers 25Wh (~6750mAh @ 3.7V), Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 offers 6800 mAh battery while the 8.9" Galaxy Tab offers 6000 mAh battery. iPad 2 has the best battery life out there. Lot of users have complained about Android's battery life. Google is expected to roll out an update to fix the issue soon.

Decision maker: There are several factors to consider before you make your final decision. Galaxy Tablets offer better hardware and screen size options to choose from at a relatively lower price. However, Apple's battery life beats both the tablets. If you are a frequent flyer you should go with iPad 2. However, for the rest of us, Samsung Galaxy Tab looks to be a better buy. Tell us your opinion.
