Database Hit Vs Performance break in J2EE

Hi all,

I always hearing that querying a database is alaways a performance issue in the J2EE based web applications. How far its true? and what basis the performance is being measured? Kindly clarify and also suggest how the database can be used extensively and effectively without breaking the performance.

Thanks,
logee
