DARPA's LS3 - The Four Legged Robotic 'Big-Dog' Shows New Gaits

If riding around your campus on a huge robotic dog appeals to you, DARPA's latest demonstation of its four-Legged Squad Support System (LS3) with the two robotic “pack mule” prototypes is something you should watch. Well, it is designed, what one can predict, to be carrying the gear for soldier troops, DARPA has been testing it outdoors since earlier this year. Using continual improvements, this big-dog like looking robot may in future carry dismounted squad members or autonomously following them through rugged terrain. How awesome would they be if they can do all that while interpreting verbal and visual commands.

You can see in this video how the LS3 can trot and jog around terrain and a demonstration of its perception and soldier-bounded autonomy. As the chiefs at DARPA would like to put i - the vision for LS3 is to combine the capabilities of a pack mule with the intelligence of a trained animal. Go ahead and watch this video -
