City Water Distribution System

Project Abstract / Summary : Introduction:

Water is one of the most essential commodities in our life. Water management as per requirement is also very important. Many times we come across situations like shortage of water or its wastage. This problem arises mainly due to improper water distribution.

The conventional method of water distribution is to operate the valves manually by an operator, which leads to manual errors. Thus, the operator has to be alert and regular in providing water. If he is irregular or late due to some reasons, it creates problems in the entire water distribution system. As a solution for this, we are introducing an RTC based system which works automatically. It is battery operated and the clock will be running even though power supply is not there. As this system is working automatically, it is faster. The supply of water should start at certain time and stop after the fixed time. The manual errors can be eliminated with this system and also the attacks on the valve operating personnel can be avoided.

Problem Statement:

This system is to control and monitor the water supply distribution in different areas of the city within specified interval of time.

Procedures:

The heart of the system is microcontroller 89v51rd2 to which the RTC, keyboard, LCD display and relays are interfaced. As the power is ON, the message CITY WATER DISTRIBUTIONis displayed on the LCD. Current time is also displayed. Through keyboard, four different times for different valves can be set. The microcontroller sends transmitting signal through RF transmitter, and the same is received by the receiver. The receiver section of the system consists of IR receiver and decoder which is followed by multiplexer and relay driver IC. At the output side we have a bank of relays for operating the solenoid valves.

The solenoid valves operate on 230V AC and it is based on the principle of electromagnetic induction. When the relay is switched ON, it closes its contact and provides 230V AC supply, to the coil of solenoid. Due to this, electromagnetic field is generated and the piston in the solenoid is pushed backward, thus opening the port for water flow. When the supply is cut, the coil of solenoid valve is demagnetized and the piston moves back to its original position, thus stopping the water supply. Depending upon the signal received a particular valve gets opened.

Results:

The expected outcome of this system is to control and monitor the four solenoid valves meant for water distribution using microcontroller P89v51rd2 and RTC. The current time and the respective valve conditions will be displayed on the LCD.

Conclusions:

The proposed system is simple, which is able to fulfil the requirement of controlling the water distribution in various sectors at different time intervals using wireless technology.

Why did you choose to work on this project topic : Now days in every city, water distribution is a big problem for everyone because of the shortage of water. The distribution valves are operated manually. So the operator has to be alert and regular to provide the water. If the operator is irregular or he is late due to some reasons, it creates havoc. To give a solution to this problem we came out with this project idea, i.e. City water distribution system to control and monitor the supply of water automatically.
