Career Options for Mechanical Engineers (B.E. / B.Tech) in India

As the oldest staff members here at CrazyEngineers, a lot of people send us PMs asking what are the different career options for mechanical engineering students or graduates in India. I have received this query multiple times and I have responded with different answers based on the person's interest. It got me thinking whether there is a single consolidated answer to this query.

Well, to begin with there can be a number of career options one can consider academically after a Bachelors Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
You can either look for technical side or management side.

Those who want to apply for a technical job or get a post-graduate degree in mechanical engineering can opt for one of the following -
• Aeronautical / Aerospace Engineering
• Automobile / Automotive Engineering
• Petroleum / Industrial Engineering
• Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Design Engineering / Automation / Mechatronics / Thermofluids / System Engineering etc.
A lot of specialization courses are available for Mechanical engineers in Indian as well as International Universities.
The best way to approach is start preparing for either GATE or GRE. Through GATE, one can opt for a M.Tech or M.E. course in the pursued field of interest in the best universities in India.
Whereas through GRE, one can go for M.S. course in any university across the globe. (most courses would need TOEFL or IELTS score to showcase your English language proficiency)

Those who wish to opt for Management courses that are related to Mechanical Engineering can choose something like -
Masters in Engineering Management, Innovation Engineering & Management, Masters in Industrial Management, MBA in Operations etc.

The best option to get into for management courses for mechanical engineers is to start preparing for management course entrance exams.
CAT/NMAT/XAT/CMAT etc. in India or GMAT for international universities.

Those who don't want to pursue higher studies, can opt for starting up their own companies or applying for jobs.
