Career options after B.Tech or B.E. civil engineering in India

This discussion is dedicated to all civil engineering graduates looking for different career options/ work opportunities after completing B.Tech or B.E. This topic is inspired by a similar thread we have for electronics engineers. Civil engineers do not need to be told that they can work in any infrastructure project in India. This ranges from construction and maintenance of power stations, airports, dams, highways, express ways, waterways, industrial units, manufacturing plants, factories etc.

Following are the top career options that can be considered.

Go for M.Tech in Civil Engineering with a specialization of your choice.
Broadly speaking, you have following options to choose for a M.Tech post-graduation degree.
  • Structural Engineering
  • Traffic and Transportation Engineering
  • Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering
  • Environment Engineering
  • Geotechnical Engineering
  • Construction Management
  • Geoinformatics
  • (If I have left out a major branch, please share it in replies below)
For this you need to study for GATE - This means you not only need to get a good score in the exam, but also try to get good grades/percent in 3rd & final year.

Get a job after graduation

Civil engineers can work in government departments, MNCs, Public Sector Units (PSUs) as well as private organisations. There are opportunities in major construction projects undertaken by central and state government agencies.

Some of the top companies that hire Civil Engineering graduates:
  1. Jaypee Group
  2. Gammon India Ltd.
  3. Balaji Railroad Systems Ltd
  4. Punj LLoyd Group,
  5. Jaiprakash Associates
  6. Nagarjuna Construction Company,
  7. GMR Group
  8. Hindustan Construction Company (HCC)
  9. Expert Technology
  10. Hiranandani Construction Pvt. Ltd
  11. Godrej Properties
  12. Prestige estates
  13. Oberoi Reality
  14. DLF
  15. IVRCL Infrastructure & Projects Ltd
  16. Dr. Kelkar Consultants Pvt. Ltd
  17. Larsen and Toubro
  18. Nircon Engineering Consultants
  19. RDS Projects Ltd
  20. Macro Marvel Infrastructure Corporation Ltd
  21. Potential Consultants
  22. Simplex Projects Ltd
  23. Vadakar and Associates, etc.
  24. Shapoorji Pallonji & Company
  25. Sobha Developers Limited
  26. (Please add more names in replies below)
Public Sector Companies hiring Civil Engineering Graduates:
  • NTPC - National Thermal Power Corporation Limited
  • BHEL - Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited
  • ONGC - Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited
  • HAL - Hindustan Aeronautics Limited
  • GAIL - Gas Authority of India Limited
  • SAIL - Steel Authority of India Limited
  • IOCL - Indian Oil Corporation
  • BSNL - Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited
  • ISRO - Indian Space Research Organisation
Go for UPSC Examinations

Civil Engineers can appear for IES (Indian Engineering Services), IPS or IAS exams.

Go for M.S. in Civil Engineering in U.S. UK, South East Asia or Australia

Depending on your score in GRE, preferably 300+ you can choose one of the top ranking universities for M.S in civil engineering with a specialisation of your choice.

Start a civil engineering startup in India

Though there are very few names in India, the picture is changing quite fast. This is an untapped market and therefore has the biggest potential. Civil Engineers can team to innovate and come up with ideas that better the process of design & construction.
Here's an ongoing discussion you can refer to: https://www.crazyengineers.com/threads/top-civil-engineering-startups-in-india.80668/

I would like to tag fellow CEans to add some words of advice or suggestions here

@rajcivil2k6 @Cheto @Civiliryc @Feather @RISHABH LALA @KSS manian @A.V.Ramani @CIVILPRINCESS @maria flor @prahumac

I'd like to urge you to share whatever few words of advice that you can share with fellow engineers. It can help build a good discussion about the career options (Traditional or Offbeat) and help out upcoming engineers to make an informed decision.
Not really my area. Still let me try.
1. MTech, PhD, Teaching/R&D
2. Quantity Surveyor Course and off to foreign lands
3. Join a CSIR lab or innovative corporate entity and try these areas;
i. Porous roads
ii. Recycled plastic reinforced roads
iii. Photovoltaic surface roads for solar power recovery
iv. Photovoltaic roofing that are also load bearing.
v. Storm water drains with in built ground water recharging
vi. Additive manufacturing for housing
vii. Revisit the old CINVA ram technology for low cost small buildings.
(I built a Cinva-Ram CEB press, and I made it easier for you to build one too! (cob forum at permies) )

Need more clarity about your question. Perhaps learning the tools and technologies relevant to your work might help. Also, if you are studying with an aim to get promotion or increment; it'd be advisable to concentrate only on the tools / software that you actually use in your projects.

Then there are so many other things which you can learn. If you can master Excel - you can perform analysis with data easily. You might want to learn to use project management software et al.

M.Tech in Structural Engineering before MBA - is there any reason why you want to go for both? If it's clear in your mind that you want to pursue a career in HR, you can directly aim for that, isn't it? Or am I missing some key information?

Hi Rajesh Kumar,
If you are interested in Structural Engineering, better go in for a master degree in engineering. Learning only softwares will help you but wont develop your analytical and design knowledge.

I'd strongly advice not opting for distance learning program. I'm yet to see anyone who's had real benefits from a distance learning program.

Which course would be better for a fresh civil engineer quality control or quanty surveying ??
Hi subith,
It depends on your interest to be on site checking stuff (QAQC) or you want to be calculating and computing with softwares (QS).
Regarding the courses choose from your local institutes and universities......

please answer me in detail ...waiting for u...
Civil Engineering covers (no pun) a lot of ground. See here:
What subjects should I study?
However, in my opinion one should not take a job that does not interest one. Salay is not all. Job satisfaction is very important. One can take a job as a stopgap option and to avoid unexplained gaps in the resume.

Sreejit, internships are useful. You must look to young companies that are growing, extending operations and adding facilities for openings. This is not my area of activity. If I come across something possible I shall revert.

Hello all ! I'm doing my pre-final year at SSN, Chennai. I'm interested in doing my masters in the field of structural engineering but in a dilemma as to whether to do an M.S ( because of the whole trump situation ) or an M.E in India. I'd also like some opinion on the placements available after completing M.E in India, and whether it is true that M.E can be considered as an option only by those who aspire to pursue research or teaching. Thanks in advance.

Why did you choose that branch? Presumably by choice. You must have had some idea of what you want to do later.
There is plenty to do even in basic Civil Engineering.
Bridges, water management (small dams across rivulets to help store water, rain water harvesting, and such), bridges , elevated roads, disaster relief shelters that can be assembled at site, quake-proof structures ...

The list is limited only by your imagination. Concentrate on acquiring the basic kills now.
And dare to dream of what you would achieve later, when the time comes.

Is there any job opportunity for Recent graduate civil engineer? Any company who recruits fresher candidate.
Choosing the right career path after you complete your undergraduate can be a challenging task. As there are multiple paths to choose from but choosing the right one is always challenging. Nonetheless, its not about the path you choose but rather your passion and drive for that work that will bring you success.

If you are finding it difficult to search a good job in your domain of studies, you can pick up an internship in a small firm. Demonstrate your ability and convert it into a full time opportunity.Or else, you can opt for government exams such as UPSC, IES, SSC, etc, if that interests you.

Starting up your own business which requires very low starting capital such as a brokerage business can also be a viable option for you.

I would recommend, as you are in a very early stage of your career, you should choose the right path by trial and error method. Because its only if you try, you will find your passion.
