Brake Your Car By Brain!

If you are a novice in driving and afraid of driving fast, then perhaps the Brain-machine interface, effectively a car braking system developed by Berlin Institute of technology can help you. The researchers at BIT have designed a #-Link-Snipped-#which takes commands from the signals which the brain sends to limbs and acts faster than your legs. Looking at the research, the future cars might boast of a brain controlled braking system and other features.

Volunteers wearing EEG caps used a driving simulator

The team conducted experiments for a speed of 100 KMPH showed that the braking distance can be reduced by 3.66 m or 12 feet using this technology. Computer scientist Stefan Haufe associated with the research, believes that they have identified the commanding brain waves of human mid precisely to develop the system. They have used a technique called electroencephalograhy (EEG) for the analysis of the brain signals. The system is able to detect the driver's intention to brake the vehicle and operate accordingly 130 milliseconds prior to his moving feet. This may well sound, funny, but during high speed driving a small time interval can make a difference between "an accident" and "an accident averted".

The latest technology cuts more than 3m off stopping distances as reported in #-Link-Snipped-#. Moreover there is no chance of the braking action acting on a fluke. The system will also comprise of radar like technology which will detect if there is really any obstacle ahead. So the system basically sounds foolproof. In the study conducted by BIT, 18 volunteers were asked to operate a car simulator to create conditions similar to road driving. They were asked to keep a distance of 20m behind another simulated car in front of them and brake sharply at random intervals. The time taken to apply brakes by each volunteer was then recorded and it was found that the system developed was faster and precise than everyone by 13 hundredths of a second.

However the system is far from being production ready. For the braking system to be effective, you need to wear a cap which would look absurd while real driving. Also, the technique can be made more advanced by further research. Recently, #-Link-Snipped-# a brain cap which can control motions just by thoughts. The Brain Machine interface is a developing system which can be seen as a technology of the future. The present technology will however make driving still safer.
