Best Antivirus: Post your rating and experience

AVG Antivirus is the best antivirus. I've been using it for over a year and my computer's never been affected by any virus or malware.

AVAST actually rocks on my Vista powered notebook. One thing I like about it is that it updates frequently and I haven't had any problems or system performance issues.

AVG - I tried it but someone told me (here on CE) that it only checks for the viruses/trojans but doesn't remove them. AVAST had great reviews on other forums and I decided to switch to it.

I'm not quite sure about QuickHeal. They do advertise a lot though πŸ˜‰ .

Have any of you had any experience with the "kinza.exe" virus?? My updated NOD32 with its standard protection could not detect it. It was only when i scanned with full protection in safe mode that it was detected, but by then part of the damage had be done and a few system files had to be deleted. My system is s bit wobbly now.

Nod32 is no doubt the leader of them all. Its performs flawlessly without being a burden on the machine and is reasonably priced 😎. The Threatsense technology gives it the edge over all the other antivirus in the market. But the most attractive feature is its simple uncluttered user interface.

    Hi All,

    Totally confused with reviews πŸ˜•-
Can anyone tell me which virus would be capable of removing following kind of virus? One month back, I got a mail from my friend about it.

Following is the clip of my mail:
You should be alert during the next few days. Do not open any message
with an attachment entitled 'POSTCARD FROM BEJING', regardless of who
sent it to you. It is a virus which opens A POSTCARD IMAGE, which
'burns' the whole hard disc C of your computer. This virus will be
received from someone who has your e-mail address in his/her contact
list. This is the reason why you need to send this e-mail to all your
contacts It is better to receive this message 25 times than to receive
    the virus and open it.
If you receive a mail called' POSTCARD FROM BEJING,' even though sent
to you by a friend, do not open it! Shut down your computer
    immediately.
This is the worst virus announced by CNN. It has been classified by
Microsoft as the most destructive virus ever. This virus was
discovered by McAfee few days back, and there is no repair yet for this
kind of virus. This virus simply destroys the Zero Sector of the Hard
Disc, where the vital information is kept.

Almost all leading anti-virus software companies release a patch as soon as any new threat is discovered. So all the anti-virus discussed here will be able to handle the virus.

Well out of the ones you suggested I would definitely go with Kaspersky because out of the many ones that I tried it's the only one I really liked and that really helped keep my computer completely free of all kinds of stuff and when the PC did catch a virus Kaspersky was able to clean the mess up so I really liked it. Now at uni they make us all use Sophos so we can access the network and it is terrible. Long live Kaspersky 😁

Not Free: My favorite scanner, because it's reliable, extremely fast and does not consume all your system resources (even if you're scannnig network folders and email) is ESET's NOD32 Malware Protection & Internet Security | ESET

Free: The freebie version of AVG is very nice. I am not a fan of their web related add-ins though. I would disable those. Everytime ME publishes an IE update, the AVG Web tools and the MS Patch conflict, break your IE, and then you have to wait for AVG to publish a fix of their own. It's just a big fat hassle. However, the rest of the tool is VERY nice considering it's free.

    Best regards

OK. I've been collecting data from various polls that I set in various sites.

Moreover, during the test we have infected 20 computers with different set of Trojans and viruses on different AV engines. The results were astonishingly surprising!

Well, first of all - polls. Here are poll results from 15 sites:

Percentage in number of users voting for particular AV
    ESET - 97.8%
    Bitdefender - 84.3%
    AVG - 84.1% (chiefly because it's free!)
    Kaspersky - 82.5%
    Symantec - 79.8%
    Trend Micro - 76.7%
    ZoneAlarm - 73.6%
    PC Tools - 67.3%
    Avira - 64.8%
    F-Prot - 58.9%
    McAfee - 58.5%
    CA Antivirus - 54.1%
    Agnitum Outpost - 46.3%
    Spy Emergency - 32.2%

Live test results taken from 20 computers. Dual tests were performed featuring On demand scan and On access probe

Results are printed with percentage in failure to ID and take care of the infection:

    ESET - 0.6%
    Bitdefender - 2.3%
    ZoneAlarm - 2.6%
    Spy Emergency - 3.2%
    PC Tools - 4.4%
    Trend Micro - 4.9%
    Symantec - 5.2%
    Kaspersky - 5.5%
    F-Prot - 6.5%
    AVG - 11.5%
    McAfee - 13.1%
    Avira - 23.8%
    Agnitum Outpost - 26.3%
    CA Antivirus - 44.1%

By asking both "Norton: Good" and "Noton:Bad", we learn what fraction of Norton users found the experience a good one.

Good point. Unfortunately there is a limit on the amount of entries in the poll, unless we put a separate poll for each one πŸ˜€

Regarding McAffee and Norton, the last time I used them were years ago.. when they were shipped with the computer system. Probably a big factor of why many don't bother with checking other products out unless something catastrophic happens with their system due to virus attacks.

Well I have McAfee installed on my laptop because I got it free πŸ˜›
And here is your McAfee after complete scan of the infected machine. Featuring Fake Antispyware
It left tons of trojans, keyloggers and rootkits. Sad too:

I have no troubles at all using Kaspersky. So which one is good from your point of view?

Your SAFEST #1 has to be PCTools Internet Security. Amazing cleaner and preventer yet tends to use about 30MB of RAM when idle. No big deal if your RAM is 2GB

And your choise #2 is Avira Internet Security. Very solid antiscripter. Very light on resources

If you insist on using Internet Security suite (it's rather outdated technology already, but anyway, still protective) for your #3 grab Bitdefender Internet Security 2009.

And ALWAYS use HIPS product. I recommend GeSWall

Sadly, Eset and F-Secure or Bitdefender are already slightly outdated technology. Signature based anti-virus is far too
overwhelmed by the vast amounts of malware which's being released every second.

Presently there are only a few suites (ESET, Comodo and F-Secure) use HIPS. And yet their products are not exact HIPS. And this is THE FUTURE of Antivirus.
HIPS - Host based Intrusion Presention System

There are many different products (Spyware Terminator, DriveSentry, DefenseWall, GesWall) that use HIPS
but there are not Internet Security Suites

It saddens me to say this, but neither McAfee nor KAV 7 detect rogue anti-malware at all. On our infected Virtual Machine Kaspersky removed over 300 pieces of malware, however it left behind Virus Heat and SystemDefender (2 fake anti-malware programs designed to swindle pc users out of money). KAV has always been good antivirus, but this is just sad :

Same for McAfee. As you see it left tons of malware. Trojan, downloaders, redirects to porn sites, etc.

As a personal note: GesWall is far more superior than any existing Antivirus

GesWall is practically even better than virtual box (once configured properly). It creates protective bubble, much like a condom with which it accesses the outside world. It's entirely possible to reach my box and even touch it, buuuut only through my "condom". Basically GesWall tells the outside world: "We can speak, but, please, remember that I'm unreal. Hence, whatever words you say I shall forget as we finish our conversation"

In our lab we've been testing GeSWall extensively. You can use it with supplements but really don't have to. But, just to be on the safe side:
    1. Avira AV + GesWall
    2. Outpost Firewall (not security suite) + GeSWall

On my desktop and my wife's laptop I have Outpost Firewall + GeSWall.
Outpost: Portscans + Ads Prevention (;-), yes I browse without ads at all)

You could have Avira AV installed for it's great anti-scripting engine (this is just to be on the safe side) however, it's not really necessarily, because unless you allow GeSWall or specifically want to harm your system GeSWall won't let modify anything because it has come from "unreal" source.

We've been testing GeSWall on Virus attacks and malicious urls (the way most people are usually infected) and after extensive abuse we usually scan our machines with Super AntiSpiware , Malwarebytes and Dr.Web CureIt. Result - Clean.

With Vista it gets even harder to break this condom because in order to actially allow something to be "trusted" user MUST disable UAC

    -----------------------------------------
Phew, As my personal recommendation to my friends: if you're not a gamer or your children don't play on this box - USE LINUX!!!

    Be Safe 😁

I used to use two different scan engines.. (one only activated for on demand scanning, of course).

Now I just use one. Quite lazy to scan so many files these days.. so its better to try preventing the virus from coming in the system in the first place πŸ˜‰

I have used all the antiviruses in the poll and i think the best antiviruses are as follows (in descending order-Best ones first):
    1. Kaspersky Antivirus(2009 & 2010): Its low on system resources and detection rate is very high. It is a shareware(not free- only 30days trial).
    2. McAfee: Its moderate on system resources and detection rate is good. It is a shareware but you can find updated ones at download.com or by googling.
    3. Bitdefender: Its very high on system resources but has good detection rate. Its also a shareware.
    4. Nod32: Its moderate on system resources but has not so good detection rate. Its also a shareware.
    5. AVG: Its high on system resources and its detection rate is ok. It comes in two versions: one is freewareand other is shareware. Shareware is much better than freeware as its detection rate is better than the free one.
    6. Norton: Its old versions (before 2009) are high on system resources and detection rate is not so good. They are developing it and from 2009 version, they have improved a lot in detection rate as well as it uses less system resource. Still i place it in the last because of its detection rate. It is a Shareware.

best is bit defender....i found it to be pretty darn good...also, a free version is available from their website...you need to register for it, and of course it is available only for home users...

I had problems with nod 32...it couldn't detect conficker.win32 worm...well, it did detect the damn thing, but only after it had infected my system32 folder..and they did not have any solution for it for quite some time...that made me install bit defender (linux version)

I gave up using Microsoft OS, and gave up trying to use it for internet access. It's still the only game in town for, you know, games, but these days I find the best antivirus s/w is called Linux.

No need to sweep out the trash every week, no trojans or sector viruses to worry about; the remaining problem is spyware and cookies, but that's a doddle.
With MS, you are obliged after paying hard cash, to purchase or "borrow" antivirus s/w because MS has never built in any security - that came after they realized the internet has users with malicious intent, what a surprise that must have been for them! But since there is fundamentally no "secure core" in their OS, all the security add-ons really are just afterthoughts; they actually expect you to deal with this yourself, the bounders!

    Hi friend 😎
I don't think that we can able to judge which one is best as per my knowledge all the antiviruses are to quarantine or kill some specif viruses, they are spyware malware or adware. For example Norton is very good against spywre, similarly KASpersky is good against malware. Also there is one more software recently in more demand is Quickhill, provide an advance security to system, fight against spyware, malware. Also provide a good scanning facility for USB Drives or other input Hardwares.

    Hello,

I have used licensed Kaspersky Antivirus for about two years now and I can safely say that it is the best available commercial anti-virus solution in the market. I have used licensed Norton, McAfee, Avast and Bit Defender. I'll explain about them in detail.

Norton: Norton has been an old chap in the market being very popular in the early days and lack of awareness among the people (Indian) led to everyone using its products. Other anti-virus software available during that period were Trend Micro, Webroot Spy Sweeper etc. These are still available. Norton was the worst of all the anti-virus software that I have ever used. It made the system hell slow. You had to leave your system alone with just the antivirus running on it. It reported viruses that didn't exist in the system. This has been reported and documented by noted hacker Ankit Fadia in one of his books.

McAfee: I used McAfee when it was given by Satyam InfoWAy as an antivirus free with their broadband connection. It reported only anti-viruses and no software intrusion like installing a trojan while installing a software in the background etc, or in patching pirated games.

Avast: Avast was a classic anti-virus considering it was free. However, its corporate version was much better than Home version and I felt that home version was lacking in many areas. It scanned very slowly and due to its poor interface (where the moment it detected a virus, it demanded an action from the user right away and stopped continuin the scan, which made me sit in front of my PC for the notification). This was three years back.

Kaspersky:This is the best anti-virus, better than AVG or Avira Anti-Virus. It check everything automatically. I am using Kaspersky Internet Security.
It scans pen drives diligently and my PC stays free of viruses even when I insert an infected pendrive. All the software is scanned before installing, which helps me detect a trojan behind some patches etc. Its internet security is quite comprehensive and feasible to those who have high-value files in their system. Scanning is fast, interface is good and available option spans many areas. All in all, I am very satisfied with this, and hence I would continue buying it till I find something better.

AVG: I have seen AVG installed in my college PCs, it was a bad experience. Not much to comment about it.

Kaspersky is a good value for money I must say but their performance have gone down in past few quarters. But among the paid ones it is still recommended.

Norton WAS the worst AV but the current versions are scoring above everyone else. It is getting good overall reviews lately.

Avast WAS the way you described. The new 5.0 version is good one with consistent rating in security tests. Its boot time scan is very handy in case of serious infections.
it is well received and highly recommended among the free ones.

Avira has excellent detection rates but has its own issues too such as higher false positives (highly undesirable for average pc users) among others.

AVG has slipped down in the rating recently. Just pops in once in a while. Not highly recommended.

McAfee, Bitdefender,Gdata, ESET, TrendMicro etc are somewhere in between.

Strange, I used AVAST for nearly 2-3 years and never had any issue with it. In fact, I found AVAST and AVG to be a good choice for any regular user. I Used all most all top av's. And my last opinion was the one which i tried first! It Is Avast! I Had the Problem of deleting files without consent sometimes. but that doesn't mean that av is not good. we should go into the settings where it clearly gives the options to choose from, when a virus or malware is found. we may set that to delete manually. But to be true, norton is a very good compared to avast and when it comes to pc perfomance, norton is no longer comparable to avast. apart from avast,i prefer using mcafee and avira. Dear,Big k., as you mentioned rightly, downloading from trusted sources and non-using torrents will help a lot. and scaning removable disks first and then using it will be a added help.

    Hi All,

Being worked into the industry for long time and with my experience, I would like to to elaborate it a bit further. I think this would help to understand it in a better way.

    1. There is no concept as "Best Antivirus". X antivirus are able to detect "abc" virus/malware and Y antivirus is able to detect "xyz". No antivirus is perfect.

    2. Symantec CEO said antivirus is Β dead - long back.

    3. There are other features associated Β to antivirus (generally paid version), such features could be Sandboxing, Avoiding Spam, safer shopping,Secure wipe, firewall. Hence don't always go by the free version.

    4. Many malware/virus Β last for less than an hours time and vanishes forever. hence no signatures recorded or reported.

    5. I was never infected by virus/malware because of antivirus is a myth.Β

    6. It acts as a deterrent for common viruses. Its good to have one. It really helps.

Open to take it further, if you have queries...Fire!
