"Beastie" - To Be The Fastest Human Powered Vehicle

Renowned cyclist Graeme Obree had been performing some seriously crazy engineering in his backyard to develop what he calls Beastie - a hand-crafted bike that will break the human powered vehicle land speed records. Obree thinks that he'll be able to break the 100 mph barrier with his human powered vehicle. Cycling at 161 kmph is surely going to be fun and looking at the design of the bike, it's quite clear that Obree believes in transparency. He wants people to see everything in action - right from the human powering the bike and the gear-train that will roll the bike to record breaking speeds.

While we do not have much to talk about the exact modifications Obree has put in; all we know is that the shoe plates have been re-positioned and there's going to be elbow support at the front. Plus, in order to achieve an aerodynamic design, the bike's regular direct drive has been replaced by a drive to the chainwheel. Another chain connects this chainwheel to a sprocket which turns a bigger chainwheel. This big chainwheel connects to the rear wheel. Obree admits that this mechanism consumes more energy but it allows for the aerodynamic design that is needed to attain the 100 mph speed.

We wish Obree all the best and look forward to his attempt. Check the following video -
