Adhoc networks

i thought I would post this as a fun activity. But no, For some reason I am unable tor each internet thorugh my roomie's computer ( poor girl has given up hopes and now dozing off)
what I did
*donated my wireless router to next door guys ๐Ÿ˜
*made my roomie computer as a host in my adhoc network, note that she is connected to internet
*joined her network.

Basic testing:
I have not done any encruption so, its more of unsecured network
Her IPV4 address for the wireless adapter is 192.168.0.1 hence a private network
My gateway address was a variant of 192.168.0.xxxx
I had enabled ICS as well and removed all the firewall stuff
But still, when I try pingin her computer, my ping fails with error" general failure"

I can see ICS being one of the network devices as well. I will anyways try doing it again this week end or for that matter when ever I find time, but any intrim help is preferred ๐Ÿ˜

I am no networking expert or even an IT sudent for that matter, but let me make a try. So guys correct me if I am wrong.

Durga, please just double check the following things :

    1. Is there any problem with the wireless adapters or NIC of either computers.

    2. Check if the Internet Sharing is properly enabled on the server computer ( your friends computer in this case).

    3. If both these things are in place, then just try enabling WEP option and enter a secure network key. May be this may do the trick, but I am not sure. Just try it.
I think the unsecured thing may be creating the problem.

There may be some other technical reason for this connectivity problem as it seems that you must have certainly gone through all the set up steps properly.
Any networking geek here can possibly shed some light.

    1.ICS - checked
2.WEP encryption - doesnot make a difference as last time i did this i had encryption on , but no difference in output.
The last time I did this,I was able to go ahead till I and my mate had access to each others shared folders, but then it was really not happening to share internet.I am quite sure in adhoc mode your computer does surely act as one( atleast the host).
I should be definitely be missing with one configuration.
3.NIC - they are quite fine as I usually use wireless LAN connections

    Hi Durga,
With regards to your latest input, if the ICS and the NIC are working fine then confirm the following things:

Make sure that both the nodes have the same SSID assigned and whether the wireless adapter is transmitting the SSID or network name properly.

Manually set the IP Address of your computer to 192.168.0.2 if your friends IP is 192.168.0.1 and sunet mask as 255.255.255.0 indicating a private network using your friends computer as the source server.

Make an attempt to connect your computer to the router used by your friend by using a wired cable to check if it is establishing and transmitting an internet connection properly.

See that there are no electronic gadgets or small piconets ( bluetooths) or even microwaves or things using RF mode in very close proximity of your computers as they may be causing interfernce.
But that seems less of a possibility because piconets usually use frequency hopping to avoid interefence. But even then do confirm it and disable them if they are very close by.

And once again attempt to do the connection with an encryption and ensure that you configure the firewall to allow sharing.

See if any of these things work.

    All the Best ๐Ÿ˜€

    Hi Rohan,

Firstly I had named my Adhoc network, so SSL ID would be same as my laptop acts as a client here trying to connect to the network already formed as well, the IPV4 address is assigned as according to my router( presently my roomies laptop) which is mostly 192.168.x.x. What is the need to manually set the IPV4 address when the one being assigned is correct. I am confirming its correct as I can see that the default gateway for my laptop is my roomie's laptop!
I have to check for the other wireless sessions though. i doubt Himachi activated on my computer might be causing trouble as it intialises a private network of its own and thus sometimes the residential gateway is displayed as himachi rather than my roomie's laptop name.
I will give it another go sometime this weekend

    Durga,

Yes the SSID's have to be the same to be connected to the same network, I was asking you to only confirm if they are being properly transmitted by the adapter during a session because at times it doesnt.

Secondly, yes definetly the roommates computer will be a default gateway for your computer as her PC acts as the source to which you connect and from which you acquire an internet connection. So it will act as a router for your computer on her private network.
I asked you to set the IP manually because sometimes when you set the IP to be automatically assigned ( in the configuration check box) it fails to do so and creates problems ( it happened with me though on a wired connection)

Anyways hope you get connectd the next time effortlessly.

thanks! I can only say this: never never never give up! ๐Ÿ˜ so this weekend, i will try in a different way just to see if I missed out any configuration

durga, can you provide a diagram of your network if you don't mind? As well as the brand of the wireless router. You might need to change the settings on its configuration page ๐Ÿ˜€
