Quadcoptors From Chiba University Fly In Formation Using Image Processing

Chiba University's Nonami Group has demonstrated four drone robots that fly in a formation using image processing techniques. Cameras are set up such that they capture the markers on the flying robots and send all the images to a host computer. Th computer in turn calculates the position within 1 mm and the altitude. Though this demo is done with just four quadcoptors, in an actual outdoor setting these, the more they are, thee faster they can obtain information.

These complicated little drones are a result of rigorous modeling and they've designed a controller that matches this complexity. The team has worked with the Police Department in an emergency drill to test their robots in an explosion at a chemical plant. The drones had to find out if people were on site, and return. That demo seems to be a success too, because the Police Department now wants to introduce this system.
