World's First 3D Printed Blood Vessel Developed By Chinese Company

A Chinese company named Sichuan Revotek Co. Ltd. has developed world's first 3D bio-printer that can create blood vessels using their breakthrough stem cell bio-ink technology and a data model based on a cloud computing platform. The Chinese researchers behind this technology have made this possible by finding the appropriate material and tools to do the job. With their findings, the team now has an efficient 3D bio printing technique to create stem cell-based blood vessels. Now blood vessels are the key parts that help organs in transferring nutrients to other organs. It seems that 3D printed blood vessels are the first step towards fabricating other organs in human body.

The technology at work here is being called 'Biosynsphere' and a revolutionary bio-ink was used to develop the blood vessel.

If the researchers are able to create an artificial network of multiple blood vessels, the day when scientists are able to 3D print and fabricate organs such as liver & kidneys that need to be transplanted is not far.

The core of the printer is a BioBrick in which there are stem cells. Given certain environment and conditions, the stem cell can, according to requirement, split into the cells that we need. The researchers print multiple layers of cells; where each layer has different cells that can be controlled.

This technology is all about finding the method of sustaining vascular cells and several other active substances. For keeping the cells active, the environment they are kept in is regulated during the printing process.

In their demonstration, the researchers got two nozzles working alternatively and in this way the bio-printer could create a 10 cm long blood vessel in just 2 minutes. Since every blood vessel pulses with a heartbeat, it isn't blocked and can repair itself after a rupture.

In China alone, there are more than 3 lakh patients who are struggling to get organ transplants.
Although this technology has been a major step forward, the Chinese researchers believe that it needs many further advancements before it can be brought to practical use in medical research.

Right now, the company is seeking to attract more talent to its research work and looking forward to cooperation from international scientists. Take a look at a video demonstration here -
