Sony SmartEyeGlass Developer Edition To Start Selling In 10 Countries

Google Glass was a product meant for researchers to find out the possibilities of wearable tech. Well, it seems, its competitor Sony has taken a step forward and launched the Sony SmartEyeGlass Developer edition as a standalone product in 10 different countries. Called SED-E1, the Sony SmartEyeglass will now not only be available in US, UK, but European countries Belgium, Germany, Italy, France as also Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Japan. The company has also released the different price tags for all these countries. So, more on that later, but first let's take a look at the various functions the SmartEyeGlass is capable of performing.

Featuring a binocular display for true augmented reality (AR), the SmartEyeGlass features lenses are powered by holographic waveguide technology that is said to provide it with a good transparency and bright display. Not only is the low-energy consuming monochrome display enable clear text information for the user, but since it is just 3.0 mm thin, it is comfortable to wear as well. By creating different apps for the AR display of the SmartEyeGlass, users can not only make it useful for getting road guidance, but even find more advanced use cases such as getting guidance for repairing the car or even get smart information about managing inventory and such.

Among the key features, the Sony SmartEyeGlass specifications speak of a CMOS image sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, electronic compass, brightness sensor, and microphone. Once paired to your Android smartphone, the SmartEyeglass can make use of the GPS location information received wirelessly over Bluetooth or wireless LAN. Basically, users can see symbols, images and text super-imposed on their glass's display such that it appears in the natural field of view. Coming to the pricing and availability - On March 27, SmartEyeglass Developer Edition SED-E1 will be available in Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands and Spain for 670 EUR, in Sweden for 5810 SEK, in Japan for 100,000 JPY, in United Kingdom for 529 GBP and in USA for 840 USD.

Sony wants developers to combine the SmartEyeglass sensors and camera with the powerful features of the smartphone to create unique hands-free use cases. For that they have made the #-Link-Snipped-# along with sample code and an emulator available for download. There are ample of tutorials, design guidelines, API references etc. available too.
