Slow Motion Done In Style - Thanks To Robotic Camera System From NHK

NHK is developing a multi-viewpoint robotic camera system which employes 8 cameras to capture slow motion in style. All the 8 cameras film the same moving object and allow for creating the time-stopping effect. The previous ways of capturing 'bullet time' slow motion involved fixed cameras, so they could only capture the objects within their viewing angles. However, with the moving camera system, the objects can be tracked over a larger space.

Each of the camera in the system is controlled by two motors that allow for pan and tilt motions. The cameras can even share the lens data and can zoom in & out on objects in perfect synchronisation.

The system goes beyond simple switching between cameras which restricts the overall depth & angle required for perfect shot. NHK's algorithms allows direction control visually so that the orientation of the cameras is perfect.

The pictures captured from this robotic camera system is ready for sending out after about a minute filming is finished. The team says that it'd be ideal for sports broadcasting and will make it incredibly easy to understand what's going on by offering multiple viewing angles to viewers than just the slow motion reply. The system can be used with 3D TVs which are currently being developed by NHK.

Check out the video footage below to see the system in action.
