Samsung Smart Watch 'Galaxy Altius' Is Under Development

Samsung's VP of Mobile, Lee Young Hee has broken his silence on the latest developments inside the south Korean electronics giant Samsung. Samsung's engineers are developing a smart watch, or connected watch or 'Galaxy Altius' and according to Lee, they have been preparing for the watch product for so long. It looks like Samsung is also working on other wearable devices and now we have an official confirmation that a wristwatch is definitely one of them. Lee did not disclose any other details about the watch or other wearable gadgets Samsung is developing.

It's not the first time that Samsung is designing a wristwatch. About a decade ago, the company had launched the world's watch-phone called 'Anycall' (SPH-WP10). However, the product didn't do very well in the markets then.

In the recent times, software technology and microelectronics have advanced to a level that the electronics companies can now think of integrating the functions available on mobiles and tablets into a wristwatch. The watch industry is going strong and is expected to generate over $60 billion in revenues and major electronics companies want to have a major share of it. There were rumors that Apple has employed designers and product engineers to develop an iWatch.

So what features will these smart watches have?

There's no clear information available on what typical features will these connected smart watches have. We'd expect them to make audio and video calls, couple with your mobile or tablet via bluetooth, show GPS maps, take notes and of course sensors to capture and monitor health related data.

May the best software platform win

I believe the success of these new wearable devices will mostly be determined by the software than hardware. It'd make more sense for the companies to compete on the software front than hardware, because all the rivals will have access to more or less the similar type of hardware. Samsung's forte is Android and the layers of customisations they put on the top of it. Apple has decided to keep complete control of their iOS mobile platform.

Ultimately, it'd be the developer community that will have a strong say. It'd be interesting to see which company manages to take the lead in attracting the developer community to develop apps for the new wristwatches.

Do you believe that there's a market for the smart wristwatches globally? Will this product be just as successful as mobile phones & tablets?
