SALt Brings Eco-Friendly Lamps That Run On Just Salt And Water

They proudly call it a social movement, not a product. Short for Sustainable Alternative Lighting, SALt has been created by Aisa Mijeno, an engineering faculty member at De La Salle University and Raphael Mijeno, who works in business and finance. The duo has created a low-cost, eco-friendly lamp that operates using only a glass of water and two tablespoons of salt and runs for 8 hours. Created with an aim to eliminate the need for battery or kerosene powered lamps in areas where electricity isn't available, the SALt lamp works for as long as 6 months if proper maintenance is done.

The lamp has been designed using the science behind a Galvanic cell and does not contain any inflammable material. The creators of SALt lamp wanted it to become operable with minimum and easily available materials. Therefore they made use of salt and water. Interestingly, users living by the sea can use the ocean-water to power up the lamp. With saline water, users will get 8 hours of light.

Another interesting feature of the product is that you can charge your smartphones using it via USB cable. As said before, the significance of this lamp in terms of short term usability and as a long term household staple is owed to fact that the materials needed to power the lamps are easily and cheaply available. Since it does not emit any harmful gases, it leaves the smallest carbon footprint.

The creator duo behind this project has received numerous awards for SALt from various events held in Phillipines, South Korea, Japan and Singapore.

    The lamp works on a regular primary cell chemistry. My guess is that it uses an aluminum anode. The salt and water is just to provide an electrolyte for the reaction to take place. In reality more electricity was consumed in producing the anode material than can be developed by the lamp during its life. This does not detract from the utility of a device like this, which is a sort of canned light without a shelf life.

    The salt water’s only purpose is to provide an ionic solution for the primary cell reaction to take place . Many other ionic salts will also work. The anode metal is at a higher energy level than its reacted state in the electrolyte. When it dissolves it releases this energy as an electric current. The salt itself remains unaffected.
