Research allows production of high strength metallic alloys quickly & economically

Researchers at the University of Rostock in Germany have developed a new technique that allows production of high strength metallic alloys using lesser energy and at lower costs. This technique is expected to change the way components used in transport & medical devices are mass produced. The technique, called Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) has been described in 'Materials Today'. The SPS system with gas quenching mechanism can alternate the phase compositions and retain smallest grain features inside the alloy.

The SPS technique is used to fuse fine powders into a dense solid material by placing powder into a mold. By continuously changing the cooling rates of SPS, phase and grain sizes in the material can be controlled.

The research was conducted by team led by Dr Eberhard Burkel, a Professor of Physics of New Materials. His team demonstrated that the SPS technique can be used to create high strength metallic alloys using a lot lesser energy than the traditional methods.

spark plasma sintering-can it make the body building of vehicles much more easier and more economical. Can this type of alloys be sufficialnt enough to compete carbon frame's strength and class?

It doesn't talk about weight advantages, which is probably means it won't fully compete in carbon fiber dominated markets (where strength and weight is key). Vehicles could probably have a mix of the two 😀
