Prasar Bharti To Launch Apps For Doordarshan & All India Radio

India's oldest mediums of broadcast - Doordarshan and All India Radio run by Prasar Bharti under the Government of India, have been fondly cherished over the decades by the young and old alike. And now they are are coming in the from of mobile apps. These apps for DD and AIR that offer news as well as entertainment will have content that you can store as the rare archives on your mobiles, laptops and tablets. This interesting digitized content will be introduced via a subscription model. For this, Prasar Bharti, India's public service broadcaster will be restructuring its finances by selling off excess land it has acquired. And just like all of us developers do on the Google Play Store and other app market, the organization is hoping to generate its 25-30% of the revenue from ads. The company is ambitious enough to predict the revenues going up to Rs. 200 crore.

All those among us, who love the old times, and for that sake have created and liked the Doordarshan and AIR pages on Facebook and have followed their official Twitter Handles, this is a moment of pride. With about 32,000 followers on Twitter and Youtube having 1,700 videos uploaded till date for Doordarshan, we know people still love those old shows. The radio service, AIR has around 24,000 Twitter loyal followers and that just goes to show the popularity of both of these services in the Indian market. The report has quoted a source saying that, "The apps for news service will be a priority. Prasar Bharati has an unenviable credible network through the length and breadth of the country that will be put to use. It has the potential of creating its own niche amid the private news broadcasters."

Interesting move by Prasar Bharti, I must say. The app would be incredibly useful for those who're living abroad and miss the old, golden days when FM radio in India meant Aakashvani and TV meant Doordarshan. People might find that boring; but TV did what it offered to do and Radio had lower paced RJs who would actually talk to people and not to microphones. Call me old goat, yeah?

Will wait to see what content they digitise and offer.

A good move indeed. I think Prasar Bharti should, apart from news and the classic contents, also make available the programmes being aired through its Gyan Darshan channel, preferably in the on-demand mode. This could give a whole new and much needed boost to learners, as there is a constant dearth of good-quality instructors in the institutions across the country. If the Aakash tablet project moves as it was intended, then the combined effect of these two, could bring loads of benefits.

AIR's Gyan Vani and its on-going collaboration DW Networks (Germany's international broadcast network) is really a commendable move in this direction.

They already sale DVD's of the archives. But still they are hard to get hands on. This move will make it easy for the end user.

AIR will soon introduce its SMS-based news service to send alerts to people who do not use smartphones or other internet-enabled gadgets.
In order to make the most of this service, interested users across India will have to register themselves with AIR. They will then receive alerts thrice a day featuring 3 to 4 headlines at a time.
Those 3 to 4 headlines that the broadcaster wishes to forward people will take up around 100 characters’ space and the rest 60 characters will be allotted to ads.

I don't think that's a good move. People interested in news will always have a smartphone. The percentage falling in above category is small.

#-Link-Snipped-# - Smart phones cater mostly to the urban Indians. Rural parts of our nation are still dependent on rather 'not-so-smart', simple phones. Prasar Bharti does cater to the needs of that group of our nation quite effectively. Looking at things in that light, I believe its a good move by AIR.

Rural population still treat mobile as luxury. We'll have to wait and watch for the results.
