OnePlus X: Styled Like An iPhone, Priced Like A Mid-Range Smartphone

OnePlus, the company famous for delivering “flagship killers” with exclusivity of an invite system has launched a new OxygenOS smartphone that is cheaper and more stylish than its predecessors. Both the OnePlus One and OnePlus Two have been lauded for their performance but are often frowned upon for their bland appearance. OnePlus has clearly taken inspiration from older iPhones such as the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 while designing the exterior of the smartphone. The aluminium frame, the speakers at the bottom and the side buttons all look quite too familiar. OnePlus has however tried to spice things up by giving the OnePlus X rear panels made out of fire baked ceramic and onyx black glass. If you fancy a smartphone with a ceramic rear you have to be quick to register for invites as they are making only 10,000 such units and no more. You can find the registration link at the end of this article but before that let’s explore at what is exactly the X factor of the OnePlus X.

Prices of OnePlus X are supposed to start at Rs. 16,999 when it goes for sale in India and you might be thinking that since it is eight grand cheaper than the OnePlus Two it might just be a watered down variant of the flagship but you would be wrong. Unlike the OnePlus Two that has a plain old IPS LCD display, the OnePlus X has a 5inch Full HD AMOLED display which produces crisper images than the OnePlus Two due to a higher PPI figure of 441. The place where the watering down has actually taken place is underneath the stylish hood. Instead of a Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset, we get a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chipset that houses a 2.3 GHz quad-core CPU, Adreno 330 GPU and 3GB LPDDR3 RAM. The internal memory too has been cut to size at 16GB but do not worry as unlike the new iPhone 6S you get the facility of expanding the storage to up to 128GB with the help of microSD cards.

You might also remember that critics remarked on the fact that the OnePlus One and Two had subpar cameras for a flagship and that is why on the OnePlus X the company has duly included superior cameras than its predecessors. On the rear you get the same 13MP f/2.2 sensor that you found on the OnePlus Two but without 4K video recording capabilities. On the front you get a bigger 8MP camera with f/2.4 aperture lens for those all important selfies that can be enhanced with the Beauty Mode in real-time.

Since the phone has been targeted at emerging markets such as India, the OnePlus X gives you the option of using dual standby SIM cards with 4G speeds. OnePlus X is the also the first OnePlus offering that comes with OnePlus Radio that helps you tune into your favourite FM channels. The OnePlus X runs the company’s home grown concoction of Android 5.1.1 (Lollipop) called the OxygenOS. The smartphone is powered by a user non-removable 2,525mAh LiPo battery that in conjunction with energy efficient components can last for a day of average use.

The OnePlus Onyx with black glass rear cover is priced at Rs 16,999 and will go up for sale on the Amazon India website in an invite-only flash sale on November 5, 2015. You need to register to be eligible for the invite process #-Link-Snipped-#. The limited edition ceramic rear cover variant will cost Rs. 22,999 and it shall go up for sale at a later date. We will keep you updated on this matter. Meanwhile check out #-Link-Snipped-# and give us your views on the OnePlus X in the comment section below.
