LG Electronics have announced that they will be unveiling the world’s first Cinemascope (21:9 aspect ratio) curved Ultra HD TV that has an astounding resolution of 5120 x 2160 pixels at the 2014 International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) which is scheduled to be held at Las Vegas from 7th to 10th January. The curved Ultra HD TV (Model Code: 105UB9) measures 105-inch/8.7 feet (diagonally) making it the world’s largest curved TV. Since the official unveiling is not until the next month LG has remained mum on the details but it has given a sneak peek of the features that customers can expect from this premium segment TV. The 105UB9 has a 21:9 aspect ratio instead of the regular 16:9 aspect ratio found on LG’s other curved UHD TVs. The advantage of this aspect ratio is that you can play movies on the TV without having to deal with letterboxing. Thanks to its humongous size and curved layout you get an IMAX-like experience.

The 105UB9 can also be differentiated from its predecessors based on the fact that it uses a LCD panel instead of OLED ones. OLED panels unlike LCD panels are able to generate their own light. Thanks to this capability they made their way to curved TVs since backlighting LCD panels resulted in uneven brightness. One problem with OLED panels is that they are quite expensive. So to reduce manufacturing costs LG decided to use LCD panels which use LG Display’s improved Thin Film Transistor (TFT) pixel circuit technology that prevents colour leakage and ensures even brightness across the screen.

The 105UB9 will be up on display in LG’s booth at the Las Vegas Convention Center during CES 2014 and we expect LG to shell out the price and availability details then.

Hot on heels of LG, Samsung has also announced their plans to unveil their 105-inch curved Ultra HD TV at the CES 2014. This one too has a 21:9 aspect ratio and a resolution of 5120 x 2160 pixels. The company uses its proprietary ‘Quadmatic Picture Engine’ that up-scales any video content to 4K resolution. It too has remained mum on tech specs, availability and pricing details.
