Lenovo Unveils Amazon Alexa-Powered Smart Assistant & Smart Storage At CES 2017

Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2017 kicks off officially tomorrow but Lenovo has decided not to wait and announce its new gadgets to ramp up the excitement before the event begins in Las Vegas. While it was pretty evident that Lenovo would launch laptops and desktops for this event, the company managed to surprise everyone by launching two new gadgets that would spice up your smart home with the power of Internet of Things (IoT). The first device from Lenovo is called the Smart Assistant. The Lenovo Smart Assistant works just like Amazon Echo because it is powered by the same cloud technology that drives the latter. Yes, the Lenovo Smart Assistant is backed by the excellent Amazon Alexa cloud-based voice services and was made in association with the e-commerce giant.

Lenovo claims that 65 percent of people across the world interact with their smartphones and PCs with voice commands and they should have no problem in using the Lenovo Smart Assistant at their homes to play music, create lists and calendar reminders, do web searches and much more. Lenovo Smart Assistant comes with hardware enhancements like eight 360-degree far-field microphones with noise suppression and acoustic echo cancellation which can pick up user’s voice commands from 16 feet away. One of the complaints with the Amazon Echo was that it did not have a good quality speaker for music reproduction. Lenovo has addressed this issue with the Harman Kardon edition which is backed by audio technology from the experts at the aforementioned company.

Next, on the dossier, we have the Lenovo Smart Storage which is a Network Attached Storage (NAS) for the smart home. The Lenovo Smart Storage is available in either 2TB or 6TB of hard drive space. Inside this white box, you will find dual-band Wi-Fi 802.11ac antenna and a dual-core 1.6GHz Intel Celeron processor. What makes the Lenovo Smart Storage different from others is the preinstalled software. It has an Auto Sync service that backs up files from your smartphone or PC. It has DLNA for streaming your media to your capable HDTV. Facial recognition software helps you find and store your photos systematically. As expected a USB port on the back can be used to plug in other external hard drives to the Lenovo Smart Storage.

The Lenovo Smart Assistant costs $129.99 and will be available in Light Gray, Green and Orange colour variants beginning from May 2017. The Harman Kardon Edition of the same will set you back by $179.99 and will be available around the same time. Also available from May 2017 is the Lenovo Smart Storage whose 2TB variant will cost you $139.99.
