Everyone is well aware that Android and iOS continue their domination over the smartphone market, but the above statistics could change soon with the arrival of smartphones running newer operating systems like Firefox OS for Mobile, Tizen and Ubuntu for Smartphones. Going with the trend in November 2012, Jolla (pronounced "yo-la") founded by ex-Nokia employees had demoed their MeeGo-derived OS called Sailfish and now they have unveiled the hardware for it.

Jolla features a 4.5-inch display, an unspecified dual-core processor, 8MP Auto Focus camera, internal memory capacity of 16 GB along with microSD slot to expand storage. As we await further details, Jolla have said that the Sailfish OS will be “Android App Compliant”. Although they haven’t made it clear of how Android apps can be downloaded on this device they have said that some Android apps can be run with the help of Myriad's Alien Dalvik software without any alteration. This certainly is good news for Android app developers who can port their apps to Sailfish without much difficulty.

What makes Jolla a strong competitor among the new mobile operating system market? Well for starters, it is based on the lauded MeeGo OS that featured on Nokia N9 smartphone. Second, like the Ubuntu version for smartphones it features gesture based OS. Finally, it’s ability to be “compliant" with Android apps. From the statistics link above you must have noticed how Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 has managed increase its market share but is nowhere near Android or iOS. One of the reasons for that is its app ecosystem that does not feature the plethora of apps that can be found in its Apple and Google counterparts. Sailfish’s compliance to Android apps surely will prove to be its USP.

Priced at €399 (28,246 INR), Jolla will be up for sale in a few European countries by the end of this year.
