ISRO develops 'Solar Calculator' Android app

World famous for its innovative and budget friendly space missions, the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) has developed a new Android app called 'Solar Calculator'. The app allows for determining the solar energy potential of any location. ISRO's Space Applications Centre (SAC) at Gujarat has developed the app for the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and is likely to aid in installation of the photovoltaic solar panels at any location.

The Government of India has set a target of generating at least 175 GW of renewable energy by 2022. ISRO says that with about 300 clear sunny days every year, India's solar incidence is very high. The estimates show that India's renewable energy potential is way more than all of its fossil fuels put together. Solar energy has emerged as one of the top sources of energy that can be used through roof-top mountings.

The app shows the solar energy potential of any place (kWh/m^2). The location data is accurately tracked using GPS. The app receives its data from ISRO's geostationary satellites and also provides information about monthly minimum / maximum temperature of the location to provide accurate estimate of solar potential. The computed report can be saved on the device as a PDF file.

The app is available for download from SAC's www.vedas.sac.gov.in site. For more information have a look at source.
