iPhone Touch ID - All That Matters & All You Should Know

The brand new iPhone 5S isn't a big shot upgrade over the iPhone 5, but it does have something, I'd say 'innovative' - the Touch ID. As rumored, it's your fingerprint scanner that leads to a few interesting use cases. As Apple calls it, the sensor takes fingerprint scanning to an entirely new level with 500 PPI resolution. This means that it can scan your fingers very accurately to identify you uniquely. The sensor itself is just 170 microns in thickness and is capable of scanning in every possible direction; called 360 degree scanning.

What are the possible uses of Touch ID Fingerprint Scanner?
  1. The home button which has the sensor retains its old functionality and acts as your quick resort to the home screen from any app.
  2. It adds an extra level of security to your Apple store purchases.
  3. It adds extra authentication to your iTunes digital downloads.

You will be able to authenticate yourself to iBooks by using your fingerprints. The feature is only available on iOS7; which by the way will make it to compatible Apple devices on September 18.

It's not clear whether the apple will allow multiple user accounts on the same iPhone using the new technology, but it'd definately be something to look forward to.

Security

Apple has promised that the fingerprint data is encrypted and stored in the A7 chip. The data will never be stored in the iCloud or even backed up on Apple's servers. Also, it's not clear how deep access will the developers have to the scanned data for innovative integration in their own apps.

The question is - do all these features push the game forward to the other players? Do you expect Samsung and other manufacturers to include the fingerprint scanners in their devices in coming months?

Idea looks great as it increases the security to a new level.I had seen fingerprint scanners only in laptops. So it will be tough to predict the reliability of that small scanner. We want to wait for the official release to se it working in the real world.

I'm not excited or impressed by the fingerprint scanner. But just see how Apple ensures that the industry follows the trend they've just started. Expect more Apple communication on their phone is more secure than the entire competition - and be ready to hear it repeatedly. Apple needs to create an impression in the minds of consumers that it's the creator of secure mobile computing and really cares about people's data.

I doubt the sales of 5S or 5C will match that of the earlier iPhone models. This isn't clearly the Steve Jobs' Apple. Do you agree?

I think the processor is a bigger deal than this finger print scanner. Of-course, this is innovative and cool feature. But having a 64-bit processor in a phone is a little out of the world thing! As far as touch ID is concerned, I would say it's more hype less content. It's a good feature but there could be limitation, like if you are not able to open your phone (driving, in the shower), no one can unlock it, unless there is a workaround, which again, would make this feature useless. Plus if it gets damaged somehow, the phone is completely locked. Plus security is a concern too.

Steve Jobs Apple was cooler But right now they are lots bits and peices trying to be forced together

Not sure But Electronic innovation really amazes me the Home button has finally been used more than one purpose

Just imagine all the multi tasking systems that can be brought in now

I usually prefer to stay away from these kind of gadget from a closed source company with real tight DRM policies.

Call me paranoid, but who knows Apple is scanning your fingerprint & sending the data to NSA ? ☕

    You did missed 4th point

    4. It's easy way for NSA , to collect biometric identity of all apple users. ☕

haha, yes, I agree, there is no way you can ensure, than your data will never be stored. Who knows it?

And there's a famous saying "There are only two types of People in this world. One who know they are HACKED, and other's who don't" 😛

Good luck if your fingerprints will be stored on phone only 😁
