iPhone May Ditch Home Key and Integrate Fingerprint Sensor In The Touchscreen

Apple iPhone may ditch the Home key that occupies significant space on the front and also doubles as a fingerprint sensor. Source: First iPhone without home button on Apple's roadmap, but not before 2017 | AppleInsider (AI)has reported that the long term goal of the company is to ditch the Home key entirely so that the future iPhone will be lighter and prettier. Note that this information was revealed to AI by a source who has a history of leaking authentic information; but readers may note that nothing has been confirmed yet.

The insider also claimed that such a drastic change in the iPhone design is likely to take two more years and anything can happen during that period. Apple may even drop the plan to remove the Home key and continue with other designs.

Removal of the Home key isn't going to be an easy task. Currently, the button also functions as a fingerprint sensor that lets the user authenticate and access the phone's functions. In order to eliminate the physical Home button, Apple will have to develop a new technology to include the sensor in the display itself.

There were reports that Apple indeed is developing a new technique to turn the display into fingerprint sensor. Apple already has a number of patents that hint at this technology. An interesting patent filing hints at the iPhone being able to recognise multiple fingerprints simultaneously.

Apple will also have to figure out an alternative to the home key. The home key gets the user back to the home screen no matter which screen the user is on. If the home key goes; Apple will have to provide the users with a mechanism that will do the same; and that's going to be a tough challenge. This would also mean significant changes to the iOS core system.

Do let us know your thoughts on an iPhone without home key. Do you think it will offer a better user experience?
