India’s first smartphone with Integrated BHIM App-Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G launched at INR 5,290

Home spawned Karbonn Mobiles has rolled out a new smartphone device dubbed Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G featuring a preloaded BHIM app with inclusion of a unique fingerprint sensor for payment authentication in the smartphone. The device boasts of additional safety measures since the BHIM app’s access protection mechanisms have been integrated at a firmware level.

The other integrations, which would go a long way in promoting cashless transactions in the country, include e-KYC and Aadhaar authentication, Digilocker and e-Gov service access, the ability to perform person-to-person transactions directly from the phonebook, contextual payments within messenger apps, as well as bill payments and utility services. BHIM application unveiled last December is an indigenous digital payments platform designed to make payments through NPCI’s UPI and USSD simpler.

On specifications front, Karbonn K9 Kavach 4G features a 5-inch HD (720 × 1280 pixels) IPS display. Powered by a 1.25 GHz quad-core processor that’s coupled with 1 GB of RAM it comes with a 8 GB of inbuilt storage expandable via microSD card (upto 32GB). The dual-SIM smartphone runs on Android 7.0 Nougat backed up by a battery support of 2300 mAh. It further supports a standby time of 300 hours and talktime of upto 10 hours. Connectivity options on the smartphone include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth, Micro-USB, FM radio, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

In Optics department, Karbonn K9 Kavach houses a 5-megapixel rear camera with autofocus, face detection, touch-focus and flash. On the front there is a provision for 5-megapixel snapper for selfies using the finger touch-sensor. The smartphone device would be available in the three variants of Coffee Brown, Champagne and Black colors and would retail in the country starting this week via online and offline channels.
