Huawei 'Honor' Phones To Be Made In India

The Chinese electronics giant, Huawei, known all over the world for their mobile telephony products is all set to embrace prime minister's 'Make In India' initiative. The company is currently mulling production of smartphones, especially its popular 'Honor' brand mobile handsets in India. The company thinks that by making phones in India, it will be able to capture the local markets.

Zhao Gang, the VP of Huawei's Honor brand international business informed Economic Times that the company has began evaluating products for local markets. Gang was speaking at the launch of the Honor 7 smartphone. Huawei has already been making its telecom network equipments at its Chennai plant and may use the same plant to manufacture its smartphones.

Huawei received a nod from the home ministry to set up a unit to manufacture telecom related hardware and support services at the SIPCOT SEZ in Tamil Nadu. It's no brainer that Huawei is targeting India's fast evolving mobile market.

Huawei already has a big presence in India. The research and development center it set up at Bengaluru is its biggest R&D center outside of China. It employs nearly half of its global engineering workforce at Bengaluru.

We'd like to know from our fellow engineers whether they think manufacturing mobiles locally will allow any advantage to Huawei.
