HTC RE: Standalone Camera For Android & iOS Devices, Arrives In Stores Next Month

HTC has stepped out of its familiar realm of smartphones to launch a standalone camera called RE that shall go on sale next month in the US with an expected price tag of $200. HTC likes to call the RE, a remarkable little camera and its main purpose is to help you shoot photos and videos in a manner that is faster and convenient than taking out your smartphone or tablet from your pocket or bag. HTC isn’t wrong about this claim though. The RE does not have a power button, it remains in a standby mode always and once you pick it up it recognises your grip and activates the camera. There are only two buttons on the RE to make photography clutter free. The shutter button with a single click takes a photo and if you long-press it, the RE starts recording videos. The second button is the slow-motion capture toggle that has to be pressed before recording the video.

At the heart of RE lies a 16MP CMOS sensor and an f2.8 146° ultra-wide angle lens. RE can record Full HD (1080p) resolution videos at 30fps. RE is powered by an 820mAh battery which is enough for 1hr 40 minutes of HD video recording or 1200 photos. While HTC doesn’t consider the RE to be a GoPro competitor it has managed to make its camera IPX7 certified waterproof. RE has got an internal memory of 32 MB and allows you to expand the storage with the help of microSD cards. The soon-to-be launched RE app on Android and iOS will allow users to connect the RE with their mobile devices with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi. The companion app will also provide photo editing and cloud backup options and later is expected to support live video streaming.

While at first the RE might seem like a good buy, you can’t help but notice its odd shape. Next you have the cost, if you own a $300 smartphone would be willing to spend an extra $200 for just a camera? Plus you do not have a viewfinder on the RE, you just have aim for shots and expect they turn out perfect. Yes, you can use your smartphone as the viewfinder but that just counters the product main purpose as a standalone camera.

The HTC RE has been launched in India at Rs. 9,990 via Snapdeal. What do people around here think about that price?
